Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre is a creative community hub nestled on the edge of Bodmin Moor in South-East Cornwall. Our unique 4-acre site offers a place where creativity and nature collide, at the geographical and cultural gateway to Cornwall.
Sterts is entering an exciting new era with a new 500 seat Barn Theatre, a renovated 70 seat studio, a vibrant community hub (opening in April 2025) and a brand-new Front of House area for pre-show entertainment and dining.
Our passionate volunteer team creates a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for visiting artists and audiences alike. With an incredible new season running from March to October, featuring award-winning theatre, comedy, live music, family-friendly shows, and community productions, we are looking for dedicated Duty Managers to help ensure outstanding customer experiences at our unique venue.
We are seeking up to four enthusiastic Duty Managers to rotate shifts throughout the season. Duty Managers will be responsible for managing the Volunteer Team during performances and events, ensuring top-tier customer service and a seamless Front of House experience. Working closely with the Duty Technical Manager, you will oversee all public-facing operations and contribute to bar and catering revenue.
Key Responsibilities
Duty Management
1. Oversee all Front of House activities, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment.
2. Act as the main point of contact for visiting artists, staff, and volunteers.
3. Manage volunteers, including briefing them at the start of each shift.
4. Work with the bar and catering team to maximise sales income.
5. Act as a designated First Aider and Fire Warden.
6. Handle emergencies, including audience communication and safe evacuations.
7. Manage cash handling, float reconciliation, and financial procedures.
8. Ensure merchandise sales are accurately recorded and reconciled.
9. Adhere to health and safety policies, reporting any relevant concerns.
10. Maintain cleanliness and report maintenance issues.
11. Operate the Ticket Source ticketing system as required.
12. Complete detailed show reports on incidents, complaints, and maintenance issues.
13. Secure the venue at the end of the event or hand over responsibility as needed.
General Responsibilities
1. Uphold the values and objectives of Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre.
2. Identify and address accessibility needs.
3. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Sterts’ programming.
4. Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
5. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all company policies.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
1. Experience working in large public spaces or events (e.g., entertainment, sports, ticketed venues).
2. Strong communication, literacy, and numeracy skills.
3. Confidence in managing a diverse team of volunteers with diplomacy.
4. Proactive and flexible attitude towards working hours and duties.
5. Commitment to maintaining high standards.
6. Positive and creative approach to increasing revenue.
7. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
8. Experience handling cash and reconciling sales.
9. Ability to work under pressure, problem-solve, and make quick decisions.
10. Reliable, punctual, and conscientious.
11. IT-literate and willing to learn new software systems.
12. Passion for the arts and the future of Sterts.
13. Availability for evening and weekend shifts.
Desirable Criteria:
1. Experience working in an arts environment.
2. Personal License or First Aid qualification (training can be provided).
3. Familiarity with event management or ticketing software.
