Hours of Work: Full-time - 38.5 hours per week
· Four days per week: 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM
· One half-day per week: either 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Our client is a leading provider of prison education and rehabilitation programmes, committed to empowering individuals with the skills and knowledge needed for a fresh start. This is a unique opportunity to be among the first Tutors at HMP Millsike, a brand-new prison near York, shaping the education programme from Spring 2025 onwards. As a Functional Skills Maths & English Tutor, you will play a crucial role in delivering City & Guilds Functional Skills qualifications (Entry Level 1 to Level 2) to a class of 12 learners, helping them develop vital skills for their future. This role requires a creative and engaging teaching approach, with a focus on learner-centred education and restorative practices to promote personal growth and rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths & English lessons to learners with diverse educational needs.
2. Support learners in building numeracy and literacy skills, covering core topics such as fractions, percentages, problem-solving, reading, writing, and communication.
3. Adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning needs, including learners with neurodiverse conditions.
4. Encourage reading for pleasure to support those with low literacy skills.
5. Develop individual learning plans and monitor learner progress.
6. Create a positive and supportive classroom environment that fosters confidence, motivation, and self-development.
7. Prepare learners for exams and assessments, helping them achieve accredited qualifications.
8. Work collaboratively with prison staff and education teams to align learning with long-term employment and rehabilitation goals.
Essential/Desirable Criteria:
Essential:
1. Level 3 qualification in Maths & English (or equivalent).
2. Experience in teaching or training in a classroom or learning environment.
3. Ability to engage and motivate learners using creative teaching methods.
4. Strong classroom management skills, with the ability to handle challenging situations constructively.
5. A passion for supporting individuals in achieving their long-term goals.
Desirable:
1. A Level 5 Teaching Qualification (or equivalent) - or willingness to work towards one.
2. Experience working with neurodiverse learners or those with additional learning needs.
3. Previous experience in prison education, alternative education, or adult learning.
