Business Development Manager – UK Payments
* Location: London (City – Bishopsgate)
* Salary: £100k base, £150k OTE, with significant scope for higher earnings based on outperformance
* Reporting to: Group CEO
* Direct Reports: Two junior sales team members (with a mandate to expand the team)
About the Role
This is a rare opportunity for a senior sales executive or sales manager to step up into a sales leadership position within a high-growth payments business. You will be responsible for shaping and executing the UK go-to-market strategy, working directly with the Group CEO and leading new business acquisition efforts.
The company has made a significant investment in its payments infrastructure, enabling it to offer a full suite of payment processing solutions at pricing up to 50% lower than market rates. The business holds a UK Electronic Money Institution (EMI) licence regulated by the FCA and a Money Services Business (MSB) licence in the US, providing it with the regulatory framework to expand its presence internationally.
With a low market penetration in the UK and limited brand awareness, this role requires someone who can develop and implement a successful sales strategy from the ground up. You will also oversee a junior sales team, responsible for administering pipeline-related activities and supporting sales operations. Working closely with marketing, you will drive lead-generation campaigns, ensuring alignment between brand-building efforts and the sales strategy.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and execute a UK sales strategy targeting online merchants, focusing on those with established transaction volumes.
* Work with the Group CEO to define sales targets, ensuring they align with the optimal go-to-market approach.
* Lead the end-to-end sales process, from prospecting to closing deals and account management.
* Manage and develop the junior sales team, ensuring they effectively support pipeline administration and sales operations.
* Identify and engage medium-sized enterprises and e-commerce businesses that would benefit from significant payment processing cost savings.
* Collaborate with marketing to develop lead-generation campaigns, with marketing budgets to be agreed based on your recommendations.
* Leverage the company’s FCA-regulated EMI licence and US MSB licence as key credibility factors in engaging merchants with international operations.
* Maintain regular communication with the Shanghai-based Group CEO, including occasional early-morning calls (e.g., 8am UK time).
* Work in a hybrid environment, combining office-based sales efforts, client visits, and one day of home working per week, with the office being the default place of work.
Key attributes
* A highly proactive sales professional who thrives on winning new business and driving revenue growth.
* At least three years of B2B sales experience, preferably in Payments, enterprise software, IT services, FX, or IT infrastructure.
* Comfortable selling to medium-sized enterprises rather than small businesses.
* Experience selling technology-related services or products into e-commerce firms and online vendors / stores.
* Enjoys generating new leads rather than relying on inbound opportunities.
* Able to sell on cost-saving and efficiency rather than brand recognition alone.
* Comfortable working in an international environment, with an understanding of how to navigate cultural differences.
* A self-starter who can work autonomously but also collaborate effectively with marketing and support teams.
* Experience working in or with Asian HQed businesses or Mandarin skills would be helpful, but not required.
Why Join?
* Sales Leadership Opportunity: Directly shape the UK sales function and work closely with the Group CEO.
* High Growth Potential: The business has moved beyond just being an acquirer to also offering processing (Visa + Mastercard), significantly increasing market potential.
* Regulated Entity: The company’s FCA-regulated EMI licence and US MSB licence provide credibility and compliance advantages when targeting international merchants.
* Competitive Pricing Edge: Ability to undercut market pricing by 25-50%, making it a compelling sales proposition.
* Team Leadership: Lead and develop a junior sales team, with ownership over sales operations and pipeline management.
* Flexible Working: A mix of office, client visits, and home working (one day per week).
* Strong Compensation Package: £100k base salary, with £150k OTE and significant earnings potential beyond that for top performers.
Process
It is expected that there will be three rounds of interviews (after initial briefing session with JW Markets) with the final interview being with the Group CEO, who will fly in from Shanghai. The first interview will be a video call with Group Head of HR, followed by a meeting with key members of the existing London team. All in-person meetings will be in the City of London (Bishopsgate office) and the process is expected to take around 1 month.
