Life Chances - After School Support Worker
Home Start is hiring a new After School Support Worker to work 16 hours per week at their Community Centre in Leven. This role is for underemployed (working below 16 hours) or unemployed people only.
Description
This is a 13-week paid work placement funded by Fife Council via the Life Chances Programme. The aim of this programme is to gain a sustainable job at the end of the 13 weeks. To progress your application, there are three mandatory steps: CV, cover letter, and an Initial Assessment form completed over the phone by a member of the Life Chances team.
Prior to successful employment, a clean PVG certificate is required alongside 2 references.
Responsibilities include:
1. Working within Home-Start’s standards and methods of practice including Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding and Promoting the Welfare of Children, Confidentiality, and all mandatory policies.
2. Cooperating closely with the Support Worker, Coordinator, Volunteers, and other scheme staff as directed by the scheme Manager.
3. Planning and carrying out play opportunities for children from birth to encourage their development.
4. Supervising a group of children in an after-school setting attending without their carer.
5. Participating in the Coordinator’s Assessment of needs of families.
6. Collating information around attendance, plans, and work carried out within sessions.
7. Welcoming all parents/carers to the after-school sessions, recognizing the importance of their role as the prime educators of their children.
8. Being aware of group dynamics ensuring the groups provide a non-judgmental environment for children and their parent/carer.
9. Providing a safe, stimulating environment for children and their parents.
10. Being vigilant about the upkeep of equipment ensuring good standards of safety and hygiene are followed.
11. Working closely alongside the Support Worker planning activities for the children.
12. Making observations, recording, and reporting on children’s development.
13. Encouraging the active participation of parents/carers in their child’s play and other activities as appropriate.
14. Promoting the use of suitable toys, books, and activities and encouraging the use of local resources e.g., Toy Library, Library, and Children & Family Centres.
15. Completing a Risk Assessment prior to each session/outing.
16. Keeping a register at each session detailing names of all those attending, including visitors/speakers with an evaluation of each speaker.
17. Recording any accidents/incidents in the Accident or Incident Book and reporting as appropriate.
18. Responding, recording, and reporting appropriately all Safeguarding Children/Child Protection issues.
19. Liaising with the Manager regarding budgets.
20. Promoting the work of Home-Start with referrers.
21. Being willing to undertake training as appropriate, including safeguarding/child protection.
22. Attending regular supervision sessions and staff meetings.
Required Skills
1. Relevant previous or current employment or voluntary work, including working with families with young children/babies.
2. Understanding of the needs of families with young children and parenting skills.
3. Experience of developing and delivering group play activities for families and children.
4. Experience of providing appropriate play opportunities to encourage children’s development and positive interaction between parent/carer and children.
5. Understanding of child development/milestones.
6. Knowledge of child protection procedures.
7. Experience of providing care for school-aged children.
8. Ability to work as part of a team or on own.
9. Experience of ensuring effective administration.
10. Experience of working with others and ability to confidently network.
11. Experience of recording information.
12. Ability to work with others and share good practice.
13. A positive and creative approach to tackling tasks.
14. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
15. Good written and verbal communication skills.
