The Regional R&D Director for EMEAI is a member of the Global Protective & Marine R&D technology leadership team and is responsible for leading the R&D teams in Bolton UK, Vaihingen Germany, Bangalore India and Thouars France. This position is accountable for leading the development of new product technologies and shepherding key programs that drive significant strategic global growth in Sherwin-Williams’s Protective & Marine business.
1. Coordinates global technical activities in conjunction with technical leaders in other regions to ensure alignment with global strategic plans and best practices sharing
2. Builds organization capability and drives efficiency of resource utilization, ., champions and drives best practices, institutes project management and portfolio management with business leaders and R&D teams, reviews infrastructure requirements, hires, trains and guides people development
3. Works collaboratively with Sales and Marketing to support and secure new business as well as maintain current customer base
4. Identifies, institutes, and manages external technology and innovation partnerships with global companies and institutes for regional and global advantage in support of overall P&M strategy
5. Drives and captures intellectual property developments
6. Partners with Regional Procurement to support raw material selection and cost saving projects for the region
7. Develops key customer and supplier relationships that support business maintenance and growth
8. Promotes a safe work environment by driving safety practices, safe equipment utilization and maintenance in the laboratories
9. Manages internal/external relationships within a matrix environmentEnables and influences internal/external connectivity to drive strategic initiatives and projectsCoordinates technical activities in conjunction with global technical leaders to ensure product development and technical transfer to and from the regions in alignment with the global strategic product plansManages and deploys resources across regions and/or cross business or functional teams to efficiently and effectively deliver all product and technology goals and services
10. Talent Management Leads, develops and shapes a market and customer centric workplace culture for innovative solutions, execution excellence and continuous improvement. Holds the technical management teams accountable for implementing and achieving technology, product development, and service related goals and objectives. Leads the integrated talent management activities to attract, develop, provide performance feedback and retain employees and to ensure optimum level of workforce engagementCompletes, delivers and oversees individual performance management reviews, succession planning, and establishes employee professional development goals to support future business needs
11. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
12. Master’s Degree in Chemistry (preferred)
13. Minimum 15 years industry experience or equivalent in the development of coatings, plastics, or related products and/or polymer development / materials science
14. Direct leadership of teams at multiple sites for > 5 years
15. Strong strategic perspective and ability to deal with complex requirements and set priorities
16. Must be able to communicate in a clear, concise professional manner internally and externally to identify and build productive collaborations and partnerships.
17. Knowledge of related Regional markets, product stewardship, and regulatory requirements
18. Demonstrated intellectual property management, including contracts and patents
19. Demonstrated ability to work within major cross-functional and global programs/groups
20. Demonstrated ability to drive open innovation and attract industry and academic experts, ability to set up and lead partnerships and joint developments
21. Experience in project management tools, ., Design for Six Sigma / statistical expertise desired
