The Anglo-Finnish Society (A-FS) is seeking a new Hon Treasurer.
About the A-FS
Founded in 1911, the A-FS is the oldest Finland-related voluntary organisation in the UK. Non-political and non-profit making, the A-FS fosters cultural and social relations between these two countries.
Our Patrons are HM King Charles III and HE The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb. Our Hon. President is HE The Ambassador of Finland.
We have a membership of about 200.
The Hon Treasurer is an Officer of the A-FS and a Member of Council which oversees the management of the Society’s business. The Hon Treasurer is responsible for transacting the financial business of the Society and keeping Council informed regarding the financial status of the Society. The Hon Treasurer works closely with the Chair, Vice-Chair, the Hon Secretary, and the Membership Secretary - see the A-FS website for further details https://www.anglofinnishsociety.org.uk/.
Council meetings are held four times a year - currently two in-person (in Central London) and two via Zoom.
We hold between 10 and 12 events a year in a variety of locations in London. These events comprise illustrated talks, visits to sites of interest, and dining events organized by the Society and external events such as concerts and exhibitions in which the Society participates. We also work closely on events with the other Anglo-Nordic (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) societies to expand the range of cultural and social interactions for our respective members.
The Hon Treasurer role
The Society’s finances are not complex. Membership subscriptions mostly come in January, while income and expenses relating to events are spread across the year. Organisation costs are minimal. The Society has a healthy level of cash reserves which are held on deposit. We predominantly use online banking. The Hon Treasurer manages finances mainly through the Cash Book.
Financial updates for Council are provided ahead of their meetings from the Cash Book. Annual accounts (including a Hon Treasurer’s report) are prepared in February ahead of the early Spring AGM held in Central London. A Corporate Tax return (for interest income) is prepared and submitted in September.
The accounting records are currently on Excel spreadsheets held on the A-FS Cloud account and are viewable by all A-FS Officers. We are looking at migrating to an accounts package, such as Xero integrated with a web-based membership management package front end. Decisions on this matter would be made in conjunction with the successful candidate.
The current Hon Treasurer will remain in post to assist with the transition of the successful candidate.
Candidate requirements
1. Accounting experience is essential
2. Competent in the use of IT

4. An existing interest in things Finnish/Nordic or a yearning to find out more about this country/region is an advantage but not essential.
