An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our busy and dynamic Children's Emergency department as a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). This is a newly created post to lead and drive links between Paediatrics and ED. This post will work alongside an existing PEM consultant to provide high quality care to our Children's Emergency Department (ED)., The Children's ED receives approximately 17,000 patients per year and receives both GP & self referrals from across Buckinghamshire. We currently have 1 WTE PEM Consultants in post and work closely with our Adult ED colleagues. In April 2023 we opened our new Children's ED which has been purposed built and provides care to the children and young people of Buckinghamshire. The unit contains 2 Paediatric Resus bays, individual rooms and a Children's Observation Unit., Demonstrate strong clinical leadership when working clinically across the many areas of the department delivering excellent and high quality patient care and supporting the shift leader in the management of patient flow and activity through the department. Provide Shop Floor presence from 08.00 - 00:00, 7 days a week, both in adults and paediatrics Develop and revise Standard Operating Procedures for the Children's Emergency Department. Promote safe, effective care of children within the Children's Emergency Department, including providing training to clinical and nursing staff Work collaboratively with other clinical colleagues to further reform the urgent and emergency care pathway for children The post holder is expected to spend at least 50% of their clinical time in the Children's Emergency department, providing shop floor supervision and promoting clinical excellence in the care of children attending the Department. Attend internal and external Stake Holder meetings as required MedicalEducationandTraining Participate in the professional supervision, management and teaching of the staff within the Emergency Department. ClinicalAuditandClinicalGovernance Participate in clinical audit across the department in line with Trust policy and guidelines Implement audit and research findings across the department. Comply with the Trust clinical governance processes in a timely manner. · The department arranges monthly academic half days focussing on lessons learnt, new developments in the field of emergency medicine and longitudinal case audits. The event is streamed live for all the team members to be able to watch from home as well as to watch it at a later time. ContinuingProfessionalDevelopment Supporting Professional Activities are undertaken by all Consultants in a collaborative manner based on SDU needs. We strongly encourage people to develop sub specialist interest according to the needs of the department. Jobplan There is scope for flexible working and we are keen to support a good work-life balance and Additional Programmed Activities. The current Consultants work a 10 PA job plan which includes 2.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities and 7.5 PA DCC. Weekend frequency is 1 in 6. On-call frequency is 1 in 12 weekdays and 1 in 12 weekends. Out of hours Pas are calculated at 3 hours per PA.
Applicants should possess, or be within 6 months of receiving, a CCT in Emergency Medicine or Paediatrics with at least 6 months experience in paediatric emergency medicine. Equivalent clinical experience will also be considered.
The successful applicant will join a workforce of consultants, which are planned to expand in line with College of Emergency Medicine recommendations including a PEM consultant. The post holders will participate fully in the provision of Emergency Medicine including clinical governance and the delivery of both Trust and Department of Health Clinical Quality Indicators.
