Description The Service & Team: The Strategic Historic Environment team is focussed on identifying, recording, enhancing, conserving, presenting and interpreting the historic environment of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We are active delivery partners of the Bord Ertach Kernow, helping to drive forward Heritage at the Heart of an Evolving Cornwall: A Strategy for Cornwall’s Historic Environment (2022 – 2030), supporting many projects including the development of the Cornish Distinctiveness Assessment The Role: The Historic Environment Record (HER) Officer, as a member of the Strategic Historic Environment (SHE) team, brings a supportive role to the Strategic Historic Environment Senior Officer (HER). This helps ensure that the HER facilitates understanding, awareness and appreciation of the significance of the historic environment by the public and within strategy. You will supervise HER enhancement projects carried out by the HER Assistants and volunteers, ensuring the HER is the most up-to-date resource for consultation. You will be actively involved in outreach events and continue to develop the team’s relationship with local interest community groups, playing a supporting role in promoting the HER to colleagues, partner organisations and the public. You will also provide a holistic and inclusive approach to the day-to-day management of the HER at a local level, involving both internal and external stakeholders. A knowledge of the HER database and local archaeology will also be needed to provide information and interpretations of the data in response to enquiries which you will help to manage. Finally, as a champion of the HER you will keep abreast of the policies and initiatives affecting the historic environment on a national and regional level to help support the strategic work of the Strategic Historic Environment Senior Officer (HER). Working Pattern: The position is full time, 37 hours per week. Our main base is at Kresen Kernow in Redruth and although hybrid work arrangements can be offered, the successful applicant will be required to attend our main base regularly for management of volunteers and management of the paper archive where this is housed. Flexible working hours are also welcome to be discussed if required. The post holder will be based in Kresen Kernow, Redruth, for at least two days a week. What you’ll need to succeed: Degree or relevant qualification or equivalent experience in one or more of the following: heritage, landscape history, archaeology, historic building conservation, rural land management or conservation, along with extensive post qualification experience Significant experience of working in a local authority or other professional archaeology unit Experience and understanding of the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Historic Environment Record (or comparable local authority HER) Demonstratable knowledge of HBSMR, with the ability to create, edit and query datasets Excellent knowledge of British archaeological periods and their material remains, with special reference to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Experience of working with volunteers and community groups Please read the role profile for the full details of this role attached below in this advert What you’ll get in return: Cornwall Council’s ambition is to be an employer of choice, a high performing Council and a learning organisation.
