Your new company
A specialist ecology, land management, and arboricultural consultancy based in the East Midlands, working in tandem with wildlife trusts across the East of the country.
They are a wholly owned subsidiary of a wildlife trust, with all profits gift-aided to the trust to support nature conservation. Over the last 30 years, they have gift-aided over £1m, which has been used to fund habitat conservation work across nature reserves and other wildlife conservation activities and campaigns.
This association ensures they play a key role in the circular economy of delivering advice that meets the needs of developers, planners, utility companies, local authorities, government agencies, while also supporting conservation by reinvesting in habitats that need protection.
Your new role
You will contribute to delivering the Biodiversity Plan by creating a Biodiversity Inventory of the Network Rail Eastern Region. Responsibilities:
* Review existing records to identify key habitats and species on or alongside infrastructure
* Work with the Technical Authority team and external stakeholders to create a Biodiversity Inventory — a baseline of ecological data for setting and monitoring KPIs
* Undertake Biodiversity Opportunity Mapping (BOM) and seek opportunities to connect biodiversity hotspots via nature corridors and B-Lines
* Prioritize areas for action to maximize land holdings' contribution to Nature's Recovery
* Create Habitat Management Plans, determine monitoring and assurance requirements, and review/update plans periodically
* Develop long-term management objectives aligned with strategy, including biodiversity goals
* Define management needs for habitats and identify necessary habitat transitions
* Manage delivery of Route Biodiversity Action Plans and Habitat Management Plans
* Lead fieldwork and protected species surveys
* Support and lead operational ecologists and colleagues
* Coordinate with stakeholders and ensure plans are compatible with infrastructure safety
* Contribute to 'State of Nature' Reports and offset proposal assurance processes
* Follow H&S systems and undertake required training
* Maintain records supporting ISO 9001 & 14001 compliance, including audits and visits
* Produce HMPs to maximize biodiversity considering operational constraints
* Prioritize high-value habitats for biodiversity and define habitats using UKHab Classification
* Create clear RBAPs and HMPs for internal use
* Set achievable biodiversity objectives and prioritize interventions
* Monitor habitat progress and define methods for data management
Requirements (not exhaustive):
* BSc in Environmental Science, Ecology, or similar; MSc desirable
* Experience in ecological surveys, protected species assessments, and licensing
* Knowledge of UKHab Classification and habitat evaluation
* Experience in ecological data sourcing, interpretation, and license applications
* Experience with Biodiversity Net Gain calculations
* Protected species survey licenses, including Level 2 bat license, desirable
* Wildlife mitigation experience, acting as Named Ecologist for NE licenses
* Additional qualifications like CL29 barn owl surveyor, NPTC tree climbing, are desirable
* Strong organizational skills, full UK driving license
What you'll get in return
* £33,000 - £44,000 per annum, DOE
* Flexible working, work-life balance
* Annual leave, pension, health plan
* Professional development and membership fee coverage
* Opportunity to work on high-profile and conservation projects
* Most projects near the office; overnight stays infrequent
