Job Summary
The Department of Blood Transfusion is seeking to recruit a full-time B6 BMS to work as part of a team covering both of our transfusion laboratories at LGI and SJUH. As a Transfusion service, we cover the transfusion requirements for four hospitals and two hospices. We oversee the transfusion of 41,500 units of blood, plasma, and platelets every year. We are a team of Support Workers, Biomedical Scientists, Hospital Transfusion Team, and Consultants working to deliver a Blood Transfusion service which is one of the most complex and busiest services in England.
We have recently implemented the WinPath Enterprise LIMs and ICE requesting. We are in the process of refreshing our analysers (2x Erytra at both sites) which will include Grifols Blood Typing Manager software. We use the Haemonetics Blood Track software and for our QMS we use QPulse. We have several exciting developments over the next couple of years including an Acute Laboratory at LGI site with Biochemistry and Haematology, extending the use of Blood Track to include Tx Training Manager, Tx Bedside and Haemobanks.
Main duties of the job
1. Perform a wide range of complex technical procedures, including the safe and effective use of highly complex laboratory equipment.
2. Use of LIMS to enter, manage, retrieve, interpret, validate and authorise complex patient information and results.
3. Be an integral member of a team providing a clinical technical service and a high-quality laboratory service.
4. Work independently when required by the service, including providing urgent results.
5. Follow documented laboratory standard operating procedures with precision.
6. Communicate complex clinical technical information to users of the service in accordance with departmental procedures.

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
In order to carry out the job sufficiently and effectively, you will have successfully studied for an accredited degree in biomedical sciences or other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). You will have developed a range of competencies and specialist knowledge in all aspects of the discipline through extensive practical experience, in-house training, and structured study through the IBMS specialist portfolio programme, and will continue to develop your skills and knowledge subject to the requirements of continuous professional development (CPD).
The post holder will have undertaken all mandatory training required for their role and be willing to attend training to facilitate learning in areas such as basic HR functions, appraisal, incident investigation, etc.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Clinical/Scientific/Technical
1. To undertake specialist clinical technical investigations for the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease.
2. Coordinate effective workflow management with prioritisation of samples received within the specialist area.
3. Participate in equipment testing, validation, and adaptation as a function of service development.
4. Operate and maintain highly complex laboratory equipment safely and efficiently.
5. Recognise and resolve technical equipment failure and analytical processes.
6. Maintain precision when manipulating small tools.
Leadership and Management
1. Provide leadership and contribute to general departmental management.
2. Participate in line management, attendance management, recruitment, and departmental appraisal scheme.
3. Plan and prioritise the designated workload within a laboratory section.
4. Take account of changes in service delivery by demonstrating a flexible approach to work.
5. Support individual and team development.
Quality/Training
1. Be involved in the production of laboratory documentation such as SOPs, risk assessments, and training records.
2. Support a robust programme of training and competency assessment.
3. Contribute to the improvement of service quality.
4. Participate in departmental internal and external quality assurance schemes.
Other
1. Gain new knowledge through experience and training schemes including CPD.
2. Participate in the delivery of a 24-hour Pathology service.
3. Work cross-site locations (LGI & SJUH) if required.
4. Perform any other duties commensurate with grade following discussion with line manager.
