The Role
The Associate Technical Director will support various teams across NatPower, working closely with our Technical Director. The wider team is managing the development of renewable generation and BESS projects across the UK and this role will be managing the technical support activities in project development, including grid connection details, managing and communicating to Transmission (for the majority of our projects) and Distribution (T&D) (for several projects) operators and identifying new connection opportunities in GB, managing the technical design of the projects and grid connection, engaging with EPC providers, balance of plant contractors and battery energy storage system on pricing and technical solutions. You will also be expected to cover the broad technical development of high voltage infrastructure. So a high voltage development background with a utility or consultant organisation would be an advantage.
This is a leadership appointment within NatPower and the role will evolve as we continue our rapid growth as an organisation.
Qualifications and Experience required:
• Practical understanding of development, design and appreciation of construction of high voltage infrastructure (e.g. cables, transformers, CBs, substations, BESS, AIS, GIS) from 33kV to 400kV.
• Understanding of the renewables industry within UK.
• Knowledge of the main players and regulators, with abroad understanding of their commercial and business strategies.
• Project infrastructure development and design experience working on large transmission or distribution connected renewable projects within GB preferably >400MW.
• Appreciation of ESO, TOs and DNOs connection requirements, operation charges, business incentives and regulatory regimes in GB.
• Transmission experience as an employee (National Grid-ESO, National Grid, SHET, SPT) managing the procurement tendering technical requirements, sepcificaitons, design, and construction delivery to ensure it meets the Grid code compliance requirements and the commercial operation needs of the company.
• Engineering consulting experience dealing with DNO, TO or TSO transmission scale large renewable projects of >400MW in UK. This will typically be scheme development experience or secondment into a network company.
• Ability to lead a team of consultants, contractors or internal members of staff delivering technical solutions, design and construction delivery of large power generation systems. ]Role Accountabilities
• Oversight, coordination, and management of the Company’s utility scale projects from a technical perspective. Most of our projects are transmission connected.
• Be prepared to undertake the role of the Technical Director in their absence (e.g. annual leave).
• Build and maintain relationships with internal project stakeholders and sub-contractor teams.
• Provide effective communication with external project stakeholders such as TSOs, TOs and DNOs, consultants and contractors.
• Ensure appropriate industry best Health and Safety practices is followed.
• Identify, evaluate and develop potential new project opportunities; including supporting financial modelling on Grid Connection cost, detailed design cost and construction delivery cost including Cpaex and Opex for the project including from the land, and planning aspects; support the development of a pipeline of solar PV, Wind and BESS projects in the UK.
• Supporting project development, design and delivery on several NatPower project initiatives.
• Ability to appraise projects and manage external consultants for project developments from an engineering point of view. Technical design will include pre-construction feasibility, supplier engagement, detailed design (for construction) of power networks. The networks will be distributing power from generation and storage assets between hundreds to thousands of MWs, from 33kV to 400kV.
• Support and collaborate with other teams working on the projects from a land, planning and grid connection perspective. Support senior management with budgeting and strategy setting.
Essentials:

• 15+ years’ experience in high voltage technical design or grid connection delivery environment.
• Project management and project leadership experience in the power sector.
• Appreciation of the energy and power project lifecycles and risks across large scale and complex utility-scale projects.
• Understanding of the project lifecycles and risks across large scale and complex utility-scale
projects.
• Large transmission scale power generation project design and delivery experiences.
• Strong communication and negotiating skills.
• Ability to work independently.

• Excellent report writing, communication and project management skills.
• A flexible attitude to work and the ability to travel regularly throughout the UK.
• Renewable energy project development experience is a plus.
• Experience of supporting multiple project teams.

• Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
• CEng with IET
• Strong written and communication tools
• Ability to adapt to a fast-paced development schedule.

• Base compensation: £110k - £130k depending on experience
