The Health and Fire Safety Technician will provide support to the Health and Fire Safety team. Ideally, candidates will have a proven track record and experience in the industry and have an electrical or mechanical engineering background; however, this is not essential as relevant training will be provided for the right candidate.
The Health and Fire Safety Technician will have the ability to follow set procedures accurately and consistently. The candidate should be adaptable and demonstrate initiative. They will become part of a small team of professionals who are passionate about making a difference and an organisation with a long-standing commitment to safety within its Schools.
Overall Purpose and Responsibilities
The Health and Fire Safety Technician is responsible for providing technical support to the Health and Fire Safety team across a range of tasks.
Organisation
The Health and Safety Manager is the line manager for the Health and Fire Safety Technician and is not a line manager themselves. The Health and Fire Safety Technician should also liaise closely with the Health and Safety Administrator and relevant Heads of Department.
Key Responsibilities
1. Fire extinguisher servicing and maintenance across the site.
2. Assist with fire alarm weekly testing in relevant buildings.
3. Maintenance and servicing of fire hydrants across the site.
4. Carrying out regular site inspections to ensure fire escape routes and fire doors are unobstructed and operate effectively.
5. Organise and assist with fire evacuation drills across the site and recommend improvements as required.
6. Assist with the fire safety arrangements for internal and external events including commercial lets.
7. Conduct portable appliance testing in relevant buildings.
8. Carrying out internal audits as directed by the Health and Safety Manager to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented and prioritise action to be taken to resolve any outstanding issues.
9. In conjunction with the Health and Safety department administrator, ensure that all health and fire safety records are kept up to date.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
* A good standard of education, including English and Mathematics GCSE or equivalent.
* Good knowledge of current Health and Fire Safety legislation and its application.
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures (desirable but training will be given).
* Ability to handle sensitive information in confidence.
* 3+ years in a similar role.
Desirable Qualifications (but not essential)
* The successful candidate will possess a strong track record or potential for achievement in:
* Relevant health & fire safety qualifications (or working towards) such as:
o Nebosh-National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
o Nebosh -Certificate in Fire Safety.
o BAFE-Certificate in Portable Fire Extinguisher Maintenance.
o NIEIC- Fundamentals of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems.
o NIEIC- Maintenance of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems.
o First Aid at Work certificate.
o Accredited PAT tester.
o Accredited Fire Door inspector.
o Valid UK Driver’s licence.
Other desirable skills and attributes
* Ability to work efficiently under pressure and manage priorities to meet school requirements with fluctuating timelines and tight time constraints.
* Organisational, planning, and risk management skills, with the ability to work independently and unsupervised.
* Ability to investigate and evaluate any job difficulties and/or failures to diagnose faulty operations.

Working Arrangements
* Full Time Monday to Friday 0830-1700hrs with occasional evening and weekend work required to cover events and commercial lets, for which time off in lieu will be provided.
* Hours: 37.5 hours per week with 1-hour unpaid lunch break.
* Salary: £38,000 to £40,000 per annum.
* Role located primarily in Godalming at Charterhouse, with occasional work across other group sites.
