The Haematology & Blood Transfusion department is part of the Blood Sciences department of University Hospitals Dorset. The post is based at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital, but the successful candidate will be working at our laboratory in Poole on rotation. The modern departments offers a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals as well as local GP practices. The department is fully UKAS accredited and an IBMS accredited training laboratory.
The successful candidate will regularly rotate through all sections of the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department and will be required to participate in the 24/7 shift system.
Main duties of the job
The ideal candidate will have a BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a BMS, have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Haematology) or have equivalent proven experience at Band 6 level in Haematology/Blood Transfusion. Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD) will be expected to be demonstrated at interview. Candidates completing their Specialist Portfolio may be considered however they would start on band 5 if unable to satisfy the Specialist BMS criteria and will be promoted to a Specialist BMS upon completion of the Specialist portfolio.
About our team?
The Haematology department is well equipped, including 3 Beckman Coulter DxH 900s, a Starrsed RS ESR analyser, and 2 Sta R Max coagulation analysers. The clinical Haematology department is internationally renowned as a centre of excellence for chronic blood disorders including chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. The Coagulation department supports a comprehensive haemophilia service and provides a full range of coagulation tests.
The Transfusion department is keen and progressive contributing to several NHSBT pilots and steering groups, the latest being one of four full sites for the Integrated Stock Management Scheme.

Transfusion also offers opportunity to contribute to the clinical trials we are participating in, and we have a very keen interest in patient blood management. We are fully automated with 2 new Bio-Rad IH500 analysers, electronic issue, Electronic Dispatch Note, Automatic Stock Replenishment and full Haemonetics blood tracking from vein to vein.

Qualifications Essential
* Completed Accredited BSc in Biomedical Science.
* Registration with HCPC.
* IBMS specialist portfolio or equivalent post graduate knowledge e.g. competency based evidence of specialist techniques.
Desirable
* MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent area of specialty.
Experience Essential
* Demonstrable experience of working in Haematology, Coagulation and Transfusion.
* Experience of working in a UKAS ISO 15189 and MHRA approved laboratory.
* Experience of working shifts over a 24/7 period.

* Good interpretive skills at bench level.
