These are fixed term appointments for 12 months from August 2025 in line with junior doctor rotations and give an exciting opportunity to become part of the teaching team at NLAG. This post is suitable for trainees whose career would be advanced by the opportunity to develop specialist teaching skills. This might be of interest to registered practitioners who are studying for a higher qualification, writing up research, or applying for higher specialist training rotations, or any combination of these. It may also appeal to higher trainees who wish to take time out of a training program, subject to the approval of the appropriate Specialist Training Committee.
Posts are available as either full-time (40 hours) or part-time (16, 24 or 32 hours) and are predominantly based on one site but some cross site working will be required. Hours, days and sites will be discussed with successful applicants.
We predominantly teach students in years 3 to 5 of their MBBS program. There can be up to 100 students at a time on each main hospital site who rotate through specialty blocks (Cardiology/Respiratory, Metabolic, GI/Surgery, CNS/Elderly in line with core undergraduate curricula). The role includes bedside teaching, the delivery of physical examination teaching, delivering seminars and CBDs, simulation and virtual simulation and acting as a role model/mentor/support for students.
Main duties of the job
* Take part in student inductions welcoming students to the Trust.
* Deliver teaching sessions to students. This may be bedside teaching (in small groups observing student history taking and examination skills and giving feedback), case-based discussions, delivering seminars, teaching physical examination skills.
* Use Trust systems to identify patients for bedside teaching and obtain consent ensuring patients understand what is required.
* Assist with simulation training for 5th year students providing detailed feedback to students.
* Write and suggest new scenarios for simulation in liaison with the Lead Skills Facilitator.
* Support the Clinical Skills Team in the delivery of mandatory training and procedural skills training.
* Create, update or refresh teaching presentations as required.
* Develop teaching materials/sessions in response to student feedback and identified delivery gaps.
* Deliver 5th year "Carry the Bleep", "Medical Emergencies" and "Surgical Emergencies" sessions using (and updating existing resources) to help prepare students for F1.
* Provide advice and support to students.
