An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated and creative Senior Sister for Hatherley Ward HASU. If you are a dynamic, energetic, enthusiastic senior nurse we would love to hear from you.
The role incorporates a 24-hour responsibility managing and effectively leading the clinical nursing team alongside other agencies. The post holder will be a role model, providing regular direct clinical care.
You will focus on the provision of high quality, visible, professional leadership, setting and maintaining standards of clinical excellence, improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families, carers as well as staff.
You will have to build a working relationship with the stroke specialist nurses and stroke rehabilitation ward as well as the wider MDT (stroke consultants, doctors, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, SALT and dietician) to ensure a smooth pathway for stroke patients.
The post holder is required to hold a valid 1st level registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and maintain standards in accordance with UK law, the NMC, Trust and EU guidelines. The Senior Sister will report to the matron, with responsibility to ensure budgets, workforce and staff development is in place to ensure delivery of quality, safety, infection prevention and control, financial and workforce targets and be professionally accountable to the Divisional Director for Quality and Nursing for Medicine.
Main duties of the job
You will be responsible to the Matron and the Trust, jointly contributing and assisting with service delivery for 21 bedded Hatherley Ward HASU within the Medical Division.
You will be a visible, accessible, assertive figure to whom staff, patients and families/relatives can turn for assistance and guidance to ensure the fundamentals of care are delivered effectively and efficiently.
Provide professional leadership to nurses and students; accountable for your practice, acting as a role model within the department, medical division and the Trust ensuring that competence in managerial and clinical practice is both developed and maintained.
Lead the team in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care of patients admitted to the department in accordance with Trust and directorate pathways.
Support the development of nursing skills in all aspects of the role providing expert clinical knowledge and specialized advice.
Contribute to, oversee the safe and effective discharge planning of patients informing the discharge team of issues and patient/relative requirements.
Develop and use local and national networks to identify and introduce to the directorate best practice in the management and care of patients.

Job responsibilities
The ward manager/Senior Sister is an essential leadership role, combining clinical expertise with operational management. Ensuring the department delivers the highest quality of care to patients while maintaining a well-functioning and motivated team. The role involves a balance of clinical duties and managerial tasks, which may require both direct patient care and overseeing ward operations.
Oversee the clinical area, ensuring compliance with protocols, policies, and procedures. Deliver services that meet both organizational and national standards, achieving set targets. Engage in audits and research, contributing to the development of evidence-based practices.
Dedicated lead for the 21 bedded Hatherley Ward HASU and have the overview of that service including the training and development of the team.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
* Evidence of Leadership/Management development
* Evidence of continuing clinical and professional development
* Working towards Masters Level
* Completion/working towards clinical leadership programme
Knowledge and Experience
* Extensive experience in acute medicine and stroke with significant acute clinical skills.
* Good understanding and committed to good record keeping using the Trust's electronic and paper methods
* Up to date with professional issues that influence Stroke care, relating to practice, management, education and research
* Act as a role model and lead by example to ensure the Trust's values and behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice.
* Evidence of Continuous Professional Development, including clinical competencies
* Evidence of recruitment, experience in appraisals and evidence of managing staff through the sickness process with HR
* Experience of financial/budget experience and roster management, experience of Governance and identification of risk
* Experience in report writing and creating action plans
* Evidence of contribution to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies, protocols, guidelines relevant to stroke.
Skills and Abilities
* Demonstrate ability to manage a department and undertake challenging conversations.
* Utilise DATIX, nursing metrics and observational monitoring to enhance and monitor care in ward.
* IT competent using Word and Excel
* Excellent managerial, leadership and motivation skills, excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
* Provide clear clinical leadership for nursing, working flexibly to ensure standards are being maintained.
* Act as a role model within the department, medical division and trust. Utilise advanced/expert communication skills in all aspects of practice.
* Support senior nurse in recruitment, retention and performance-related issues, including being regularly responsible for the supervision and mentorship for unqualified/qualified staff and students
* Support Senior Nurses with Patient Public Involvement ensuring it is integrated into service delivery
* Proficient in stroke
* Experience in managing a hyper acute stroke patient
