BESS Technical Manager
Leap29 is partnering with a global renewable energy development and investment platform dedicated to advancing utility-scale energy projects, including solar PV, onshore wind, and energy storage solutions. Our client takes a long-term approach, owning and managing the assets, portfolios, and platforms they develop and acquire.
We are seeking candidates with strong technical expertise in energy storage, ideally with hands-on experience in optimising IRR or a willingness to gain exposure to operational aspects to deepen their industry knowledge.
About the Role
The BESS Technical Manager will play a key role in driving business growth by combining technical knowledge with commercial insight. This position involves overseeing project development, assessing technical solutions, supporting contract negotiations alongside the EPC Director and Head of Development, and ensuring the technical feasibility of BESS projects. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, development, construction, and finance teams to deliver large-scale energy storage projects for utilities, renewable energy developers, and industrial clients globally.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
• Analyse customer energy requirements and design optimal BESS solutions, considering grid integration and financial viability.
• Evaluate and select battery technologies (Li-ion, flow batteries, etc.), inverters, EMS (Energy Management System), and BMS (Battery Management System).
• Work with power system engineers to optimise BESS performance for applications such as energy arbitrage, frequency regulation, and peak shaving.
• Provide technical support for proposals, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
• Support engineering and procurement teams in selecting battery technologies, inverters, and control systems.
• Stay informed on advancements in battery technology, EMS, and grid regulations.
• Proficiency with energy modelling tools (HOMER, PVSyst, PSCAD, MATLAB, or similar).
• Understanding of energy markets, grid services, and storage asset dispatch optimisation.
Commercial & Business Development
• Develop business strategies and technical models for BESS solutions, ensuring alignment with CAPEX/OPEX metrics, PPAs, and revenue streams.
• Support RFP/RFQ processes, vendor qualification, cost estimation, and financial modelling inputs for storage projects.
• Assist senior leadership in negotiating contracts, supply agreements, and service-level agreements (SLAs) with customers, EPC contractors, and suppliers.
• Engage with key stakeholders, including utilities, project developers, regulatory bodies, and investors.
Project Development & Execution
• Support EPC negotiations, vendor selection, and contract management for battery suppliers, system integrators, and balance-of-plant components.
• Ensure projects adhere to budget constraints, technical specifications, and regulatory requirements.
• Support commissioning, performance testing, and operational strategies to maximise BESS efficiency and revenue potential.
Stakeholder Engagement
• Act as a liaison between engineering, finance, legal, and regulatory teams to align technical feasibility with commercial objectives.
• Support the negotiation of supply agreements, SLAs, and performance warranties with OEMs and technology providers.
• Represent the company in industry forums, regulatory discussions, and market working groups to influence BESS policies and market frameworks.
Regulatory & Compliance
• Strong understanding of grid interconnection standards, market participation rules (FERC, NERC, ISO/RTO frameworks), and energy storage incentives.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Management, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
• Minimum 7+ years of experience in energy storage, renewable energy, grid-scale infrastructure, or the power sector, with a focus on technical management or techno-commercial roles.
• Previous experience with a tier-one BESS OEM is desirable.
• Experience in delivering BESS projects in at least two of the following regions: UK, Europe, USA, is preferred.
