Hybrid worker, within a team base at the Shay Stadium, Halifax.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a SEND Specialist Outreach Worker within our highly respected Sensory Team, which is part of Calderdale’s Specialist Inclusion Team (SIT).
SEND Specialist Outreach Workers work directly with children and young people (ages 0 – 19 years) with a wide range of vision, multi-sensory impairments and/or special educational needs / disabilities (SEND) across the Borough.
The aim of our team is to support children and young people with vision, multi-sensory impairments and SEND to develop and retain the skills that enable equitable access to the curriculum and the wider world, with self-confidence and as much independence as possible. Working with Teachers of VI/MSI, Qualified Habilitation Specialists, and Resource Technicians, as well as the wider team, your role will involve developing, providing, and assessing short and longer-term targeted support for each child or young person on our VI/MSI caseload.
We are looking for someone with:
1. Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage time, prioritise caseload, and work independently.
2. Experience working in an educational setting with children with VI, MSI, and/or other Special Educational Needs (SEND).
3. Grade 2 braille in Maths and English or a willingness to train in braille up to grade 2.
4. An understanding of and ability to teach a wide range of skills, including communication skills, braille, IT, and other assistive technologies, as well as indoor and outdoor mobility and independence skills.
5. Experience preparing tactile resources and modifying learning materials to support teaching and learning for use in lessons and for homework in liaison with the class teacher and QTVI.
6. An understanding of classroom approaches to support children and young people with VI/MSI/SEND.
7. Experience of collaborative multi-agency work, action planning, and progress reviews.
8. The skills to work in partnership with families and a range of other agencies.
9. Exemplary inclusive practice and knowledge of SEND processes within education.
10. A sound knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and other relevant legislation.
11. The ability to contribute to the development and delivery of training.
Active participation in a comprehensive induction, reflective supervision, mentoring, and Continuing Professional Development as an ongoing requirement of the role.
