About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a laser scientist to join a multidisciplinary and friendly team supporting the CLARA Accelerator Test Facility. You will be directly involved in the operation and scientific exploitation of a new commercial high power (120 TW) laser system in combined laser-electron beam experiments. You will design, procure and install laser transport and laser diagnostic systems for deployment within the CLARA facility, to improve information available to users and drive control schemes for increased stability. You will ensure stable and reliable operation of the laser for external users, collaborating with them on experiment design and helping to improve possibilities for successful research.

The following criteria will be assessed at Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I). You will have:
Essential:
1. Minimum 2:1 degree in physics, engineering, or a closely related subject (or equivalent experience) (S)
2. Good knowledge and practical experience with laser technology and optics (S&I)
3. Practical experience with high power lasers, including their maintenance and application to scientific research (S&I)
4. Track record of experience and delivery regarding:
1. Design, build and test optical solutions to engineering problems (S&I)
2. Analyse physics/engineering problems using computational techniques and/or commercial design software (e.g., MATLAB, Zemax OpticStudio) (S&I)
3. Develop and test equipment for the measurement, automation and control of laser systems (S&I)
4. Proven ability to self-organise and work with minimal supervision on complex tasks (S&I)
Transferable skills
1. A PhD in physics, engineering or a closely related subject (or equivalent experience) (S)
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (I)
3. Understanding of fundamental project management concepts and experience with their application to work activities (S&I)
