At Northumbria we support our clinical pharmacists in their professional development by utilising a foundation programme of education and training. This includes structured rotations, educational opportunities and a foundation pharmacist framework.
Our progressive team has a national reputation for innovation and development. We have one of the highest proportions of pharmacist prescribers in the country, using their skills for patients on general wards, in specialist clinics, GP practices, in their own homes and in care homes. As a reflection of this, successful candidates will be supported to undertake the independent prescribing qualification at the soonest possible opportunity, this will be alongside our foundation pharmacist framework for development.
This post is rotational, with an expectation to work at all trust sites. There is a commitment to weekend working and on-call as part of our clinical teams. The Trust's Specialist Emergency Care Hospital is supported by a 7 day clinical pharmacy service. The post holder will be required to work at a range of sites within the Trust and in primary/community care settings. As a flexible employer we welcome applications from individuals wishing to work part time or job share.
Please note that we welcome applications from trainee pharmacists due to qualify in August 2025, or from recently qualified pharmacists looking for the right challenge.
Main duties of the job
You would be expected to:
1. Provide professional and clinical input as a member of a team of pharmacy staff involved in the delivery of clinical pharmacy services, undertaking a wide variety of duties.
2. Contribute to the continuous improvement of medicines use by inputting to clinical governance and risk reduction activities.
3. Participate in clinical audit and practice development activities.

As a clinical pharmacist you would predominantly work across our 4 main clinical sites: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, North Tyneside General Hospital, Wansbeck General Hospital and Hexham General Hospital, although there may be an expectation to work at other trust sites, GP practices, care homes and into patients homes.
Our current working hours for the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital are 8:15am - 16:45pm. For our other sites it is 8:30-17:00. This may be subject to change in the future based on the needs of the service.
On-call and weekend cover is allocated on a rotational basis.

To provide a personal clinical and professional contribution to the clinical pharmacy service within allocated or specific wards at an acute site(s). To ensure that there is compliance with medicines policy within allocated or specific wards at an acute site(s). To assist in the provision of advice on pharmaceutical matters and that pertaining to medicines management on a regular basis. Medicines management encompasses the selection, procurement, delivery, prescribing, supply, administration and review of medicines to optimise the contribution they make to produce informed and desired outcomes of patient care. To contribute to the day to day operational running of the pharmacy department e.g. by assuming statutory professional responsibility whilst working in the dispensary. To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.

Qualifications
Essential
* Vocational masters degree in pharmacy (or equivalent)
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
* Demonstration of competence at pre-registration level
* Evidence of continuing professional development to at least meet the mandatory requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council
* IT skills to at least ECDL standard or equivalent experience
Desirable
* Membership of Royal Pharmaceutical Society or groups to assist personal and professional development
