This is a MLA Band 3 post based at Leighton Hospital.

Main Duties of the Job
The post will be based in Central Specimen Reception at Leighton Hospital. This is an interesting and important job, with training provided in the pre-analytic processing of samples.
Job Responsibilities
1. Assist in the supervision and management of the Specimen Reception Service, providing an effective sample reception and distribution service for the Pathology laboratory.
2. Assist the Lead BMS for Biochemistry & CSR, through the Specimen Reception Manager and CSR Supervisor in the management of the Specimen Reception MLA staff, responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of staff in this area.
3. Identify and match samples to request cards, ensuring adequate sample labelling in line with Trust Policy, followed by entry of patient details and test requests onto the laboratory computer.
4. Pre-analytical preparation of samples and distribution of samples to the appropriate Pathology departments in a timely manner.
5. Liaise and work co-operatively with GP practices, members of the public, porters, couriers, drivers, and other staff in specimen reception, Pathology, the Trust, and other hospitals.
6. Respond to incoming telephone calls to the department, dealing with straightforward enquiries in a polite, helpful, and professional manner.
7. Adhere strictly to the departmental telephone policy/procedure and re-direct incoming calls throughout Pathology as appropriate.
8. Ensure the working environment complies with current laboratory Health & Safety standards.
9. Comply with laboratory Health & Safety code of practice when handling biological specimens.
10. Be prepared to work flexibly, including participation in a shift pattern that includes early, late, weekend, and Bank Holiday shifts and other out-of-hours rotas as required.
11. Assist the CSR Supervisor in the management of Specimen Reception, responsible for the day-to-day coordination of staff in planning and prioritising the workload.
12. Be the first point of contact for Band 2 MLA staff in CSR to resolve day-to-day issues, escalating as appropriate to CSR Supervisor.
13. Assist in the training of all Specimen Reception staff (sample handling, numbering, demographic entry).
14. Ensure all training documentation is up to date and assist members of staff in receiving adequate core skills training and completing Statutory & Mandatory Training.
15. Assist in the induction of new staff.
16. Report any staffing issues to CSR Supervisor/Manager.
17. Carry out appraisals/PDRs for Specimen Reception staff.
18. Assist with and carry out audit and risk management duties, including incident and Corrective Action/Preventative Action (CAPA) reporting.
19. Assist with the recruitment and selection of new staff.
20. Assist in the development of the Specimen Reception service, proposing changes to procedures and policies that could improve efficiency and effectiveness.
21. Ensure all agency staff receive adequate training in line with departmental and Trust policies.
22. Ensure the implementation of agreed safety procedures.
23. Report/escalate breakdowns of pre-analytical equipment/scanners/printers/centrifuges.
24. Contribute to research and development projects, including processing and storing samples for research projects.
25. Undertake audit of the service as necessary to highlight process deficiencies.

Essential Qualifications
* Experience and/or qualifications in NHS Specimen Reception Laboratory.
* Knowledge and experience of healthcare science duties to NVQ level 3 (2 A levels) plus additional theoretical or applied certifications.
* Certificate of Achievement part 1 & 2.
