Senior Clinical Fellowship in Emergency General Surgery
A full-time post as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Surgery is available at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The post will be for a term of 1 year, with the option of extension for a further 1 year, subject to agreement.
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has one of the largest Emergency General Surgery Units in the UK.
The Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) comprises a surgical triage area, 54 dedicated emergency surgery beds, a surgical ambulatory care unit, and access to emergency general surgery theatres with timely and appropriate access to all diagnostic services.
The SEU team receives support, over the course of a year, from 14 Consultant General Surgeons, 11 surgical ST3+ grades, 10 surgical CT grades, and 72 FY1 grades.
The SEU Fellows provide senior surgical input to emergency general surgery and abdominal trauma patients at all stages of the emergency surgery and trauma pathways from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will work primarily on the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) and in the Emergency General Surgery Theatres on a shift system to provide senior input to general surgical emergency and major abdominal trauma patients, both on the SEU and in the Accident and Emergency Department.
The post-holder will be required to participate in, and lead, programmes for teaching medical students, training junior doctors, and facilitating clinical examinations.
Active participation in weekly academic meetings, lectures, and journal clubs will be actively encouraged.
The unit is actively involved in local, regional, and national research programmes where it takes the lead in many areas. There will be extensive opportunities to be involved in research and audit with the likelihood of publication. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved in the organisation of the Annual Oxford Emergency General Surgery Conference and to fully participate in the Oxford Surgical Collaborative meetings.
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust.

Job responsibilities
Clinical:
The post-holder will work primarily on the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) and in the Emergency General Surgery Theatres on a shift system to provide senior input to general surgical emergency and major abdominal trauma patients, both on the SEU and in the Accident and Emergency Department.
The SEU is actively developing ambulatory care in the acute surgical patient and the post-holder will be involved in leading and running this unit on a regular basis. This will be with the support of a consultant, CT grade, nursing, and administrative staff.
Teaching:

The post-holder will be required to participate in, and lead, programmes for teaching medical students, training junior doctors, and facilitating clinical examinations.
Active participation in weekly academic meetings, lectures, and journal clubs will be actively encouraged. There is the opportunity to become a member of the teaching faculty with a number of Oxford University's Colleges and to become part of the Trust's mentorship programme.
Clinical Governance:
The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, and quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, Health Authorities, and external accrediting bodies.
There is regular involvement in Morbidity and Mortality evaluation and the fellow will have ample opportunity to lead in this area.
Research and Audit:
The unit is actively involved in local, regional, and national research programmes where it takes the lead in many areas. There will be extensive opportunities to be involved in research and audit with the likelihood of publication. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved in the organisation of the Annual Oxford Emergency General Surgery Conference and to fully participate in the Oxford Surgical Collaborative meetings.
Personal and Professional Development:
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or Study Leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate personal development needs. The Trust currently makes a financial contribution in support of these activities up to an agreed limit.
Management:
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust.
Administrative Responsibilities:
The post-holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the clinical duties outlined above and always be up to date with mandatory training as required by the Trust.
The post-holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
The post-holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for the continuity of patient care.

* GMC
* FRCS or equivalent
* In year ST 7/8 of General Surgical training or equivalent
* CCST in General Surgery or within six months of achieving CCST at the time of interview.
* Additional experience in emergency and trauma surgery. Interest in research with publications.
