- removing, treating, and returning water to meet personal and business needs - it is essential that they operate in a way that minimises environmental harm.
We currently regulate sewage treatment works, storm overflows, and compliance with water flow standards. However, with growing awareness of the impact of sewage on our environment, we are more committed than ever to transforming water industry regulation. By driving higher performance standards and using our resources more effectively, we are strengthening our efforts to protect and enhance the environment for future generations.
As a Senior Regulatory Environment Officer, you’ll play a crucial role in protecting and improving the environment by ensuring water companies operate responsibly. Through inspections, audits, and incident investigations, you will assess compliance, identify areas for improvement, and take enforcement action when necessary. In serious cases, this may involve providing evidence in court. Your expertise will support managers, contribute to training programmes, and help shape best practices to enhance regulatory performance.

In this role, your base location can be either Leeds, York, Rotherham or Beverley, The team you are supporting are based from Rotherham and travel to this location will be expected. We expect a minimum of 2 days a week is required either out on site or in the office.
The team
The team regulate Yorkshire Water's assets. There are 4 teams covering Yorkshire Water. You'll work within the area covered by Yorkshire Water and play a key role in strengthening our regulatory efforts, collaborating with Senior Officers and other teams overseeing Yorkshire Water's activities.
Our Water Industry teams are newly established your passion for developing people, driving delivery, and ensuring clear, proactive communication, will be essential in fostering a consistent approach across all teams.
Experience/skills required
We’re seeking individuals with a strong understanding of how water company activities impact the environment, ideally with three years’ experience in the water industry, particularly in regulation and compliance. However, we welcome applications from those who may not meet this exact requirement but can demonstrate relevant skills, experience, and a passion for environmental protection.
Dedicated, passionate, and confident, your background in regulation and compliance will provide a strong foundation for success. Your drive and determination will complement your ability to deliver results through mentorship and communication. Managing multiple tasks and leading a team requires strong planning and prioritisation skills. A science or engineering background, along with a friendly and open approach, will help you thrive.essional membership is desirable, and we’ll support you in obtaining this. Due to the role’s nature and locations, a full UK driving licence is essential and non-negotiable.
