LOCATION

DEPARTMENT NAME
Robotics Engineering Department
DIVISION NAME
Worcester Polytechnic Institute - WPI
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Robotics Engineering Department (RBE) invites applications for a full-time teaching faculty position. The individual selected for the position will contribute to WPI’s unique interdisciplinary and project-oriented robotics curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to teaching, curriculum development, and advising, this position offers the opportunity to mentor student research projects. A qualified candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent degree in robotics or a related discipline and must be able to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate or graduate teaching in robotics-related topics, such as robot kinematics, dynamics, control, sensing and perception, especially visual perception, manipulation, motion planning, navigation, and robot learning. Given the hands-on nature of the robotics curriculum, significant practical experience in robotics is desired and may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree. Applicants with extensive professional experience may be appointed as a Professor of Practice. After the first year, multi-year appointments will be offered based on performance and are renewable.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The vision of the RBE department is “to become an exemplary, internationally recognized, multidisciplinary center for education, research, and innovation in Robotics.” Since RBE’s inception in 2006 as an interdisciplinary program, it has grown to be a department with 25+ courses, 18 labs, 19 faculty & 20+ associated faculty, over 760 undergraduate and grad students, and over 1000 alumni. We were the first program to offer an undergraduate degree in Robotics Engineering, and we have since then expanded to offer MS and PhD degrees. Research is funded by agencies such as DARPA, AFRL, ONR, NIH, NSF, and NASA, as well as industry. With Robotics Engineering being inherently multidisciplinary in nature, our faculty regularly collaborate with affiliates from Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering as well as Physics, Humanities & Arts, and Social Science & Policy Studies.
WPI's reputation as a rigorous and innovative university rests on the shoulders of its faculty. A highly selective, private technological university and one of the nation's first, WPI believes that when great minds work together, great advances follow. At WPI, the boundaries to multidisciplinary collaboration are low. Faculty members, students, and other partners work together on real-world projects and purposeful research that are hallmarks of the WPI experience. Located one hour west of Boston, the university's campus is in Worcester, Massachusetts, a thriving 21st century college city recognized as a growing hub of scientific and technological innovation.
Applicants should submit a recent curriculum vitae including a complete publication list, a statement summarizing teaching experience and interests, a statement for research experience, and a statement for leadership (particularly in robotics) and diversity. An applicant should also list names and email addresses of at least three references. Applications will be reviewed as they are received; therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
