BIOMEDICAL SCIENTIST - Haematology and Transfusion - Band 5/6
Permanent Contract - Full time (37.5h/week including full participation with the 24/7 shift rota).
(Banding subject to agenda for change and meeting essential criteria for the role).
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Biomedical Scientist to join a dedicated team. The Haematology and Transfusion team provides an efficient and high-quality service to Stockport NHS Foundation Trust which encompasses Stepping Hill Hospital and other specialist centres, as well as community health services.
The Blood Sciences Department handles in excess of 8 million tests per year. Haematology and Transfusion has the Atellica Hema (FBC analysers), Sysmex CN (routine coagulation analysers), Menarini Resolution 9210 (HPLC analyser) and Ortho Vision (Blood Transfusion analysers). The department also provides anticoagulant clinic services to the area with community clinics in GP locations throughout Stockport. This provides an opportunity for our Biomedical scientists to work in a patient-facing role on occasion. Thus, previous experience working in Anticoagulation will prove advantageous in the role.
Main duties of the job
* The successful candidate will have a comprehensive practical and theoretical knowledge of routine haematology and blood group serology.
* You should be able to prioritise workload during busy periods and be motivated to drive the service forward to maintain ISO standards.
* Appointees will rotate through all sections of the department as appropriate.
* The successful candidate will be expected to participate with the 24/7 shift rota within 3-4 months of joining the team.
* Therefore, applications from individuals with previous OOH working experience would be beneficial.
* You will need to be able to demonstrate that you are self-motivated, organised and participating in current/recent CPD activities.
* You will be working alongside Medical Laboratory Assistants, Assistant Practitioners, Biomedical Scientists, and Consultant Clinical staff and will be expected to work in all sections of the lab once trained.
* The department is ISO 15189 accredited and holds IBMS training status. There are various projects in progress, including new Blood Science analysers and new LIMS system. The successful candidate will be required to engage fully with this process and support implementation and development of these projects.

Job responsibilities
* To participate in the routine and specialist work of all sections of the department.
* To work all aspects of the 24/7 shift rota/out of hours service to maintain service provision.
* To be responsible for one's own work (as per HCPC standards), when working independently and as part of a team.
* To ensure laboratory instruments are maintained and are in working order as per departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* To maintain a high quality of work within the department and perform all aspects of quality control procedures including troubleshooting.
* Apply specialist knowledge to check the technical validity and quality of all results and processes in the area of responsibility.
* To assist the department with maintaining ISO accreditation.
* Training/supervision of junior and less experienced staff grades.
Person Specification
Essential
* Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
* Reference to IBMS Specialist Portfolio for the relevant discipline or relevant experience
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as per requirements to maintain HCPC registration
Knowledge
* Possess current general theoretical, practical and working knowledge of the relevant laboratory discipline to ensure and maintain HCPC registration.
* Working knowledge of relevant Laboratory IT systems including analyser Middleware
* Able to review and develop own knowledge and skills to improve own performance.
* Working knowledge of Quality Management Systems, Quality Assurance, ISO 15189 Laboratory accreditation and MHRA standards
Experience
* Current/Recent Experience working in a clinical laboratory in the relevant discipline
* Working all aspects of the 24/7 shift rota including lone working to maintain service provision
* Experience of using appropriate Laboratory IT systems in relevant discipline
* Experience of using appropriate Laboratory instrumentation and techniques in relevant discipline
* Performing audits and contribute to laboratory QMS
Skills & Abilities
* Good verbal and written skills and ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and service users.
* Good interpersonal skills, able to build and maintain working relationships with others (i.e. friendly demeanour and personable).
* Able to work independently including lone working and as part of a team.
* Able to prioritise workload and multitask to meet needs of the service.
* Practical skills associated with diagnostic lab work
* Good numeracy and IT skills/IT literate - Microsoft Office programmes etc.
