Description Job Description Do you have an interest in human rights and are you looking to build your knowledge and experience working in a cross-cutting area of government? This role occupies a key position within the Human Rights Strategy and Legislation Unit, which leads work on domestic human rights policy and legislation, including the proposed Human Rights Bill. Amongst other things, you will support work to improve the accountability landscape for human rights, with a variety of responsibilities, potentially encompassing advice on implementing civil and political rights, strengthening the remit and powers of the Scottish Human Rights Commission, and ensuring that rights holders have effective access to a remedy where their rights are not upheld. This is an excellent opportunity to work on policy and legislation in a fascinating and high-profile policy area with frequent engagement with Ministers, senior officials and a wide range of stakeholders across Government, in the public sector, national human rights bodies and advocacy organisations. Responsibilities Work across the Unit, leading on specific policy priorities as they relate to development of a Human Rights Bill for Scotland and the embedding of human rights across government and public services; Working with colleagues, provide advice and support across government on the effective implementation of civil and political rights through policy and legislation, with a particular focus on the European Convention on Human Rights and the Human Rights Act; Support policy development on strengthening the mandate and powers of the Scottish Human Rights Commission, so they can effectively discharge their responsibilities as Scotland’s National Human Rights Institution; Support policy development on improving access to remedy for rights holders who experience violations of their rights, working closely with officials in Justice as well as the judiciary, regulators, inspectorates and ombudsmen; and Provide advice to Ministers and engage with stakeholders across the span of your responsibilities, ensuring timely and effective communication and good working relationships.
