Glencore Copper is seeking a Principal Mining Engineer – Open Pit to lead the growth and development of our global Copper Portfolio from our Maidenhead office in England. This role will provide strategic technical leadership across our operations in Africa.

Our Team
The Regional Africa Technical team is an essential function responsible for providing strategic planning, mine engineering, and technical support to Glencore’s Copper operations in the DRC. This team plays a pivotal role in delivering best-practice operational performance and long-term strategy while driving Glencore’s ambitious growth agenda.
The Opportunity
As Principal Mining Engineer – Open Pit, you will be responsible for providing technical mining expertise and strategic guidance to Glencore’s Copper operating sites and development projects in Africa. You will play a key role in identifying opportunities for operational improvements, implementing innovative mining strategies, and optimizing resource development planning. This senior role involves managing complex mining operations, solving engineering challenges, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards, and optimizing mining processes to improve efficiency and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
* Participate in strategic mine planning evaluation processes for Glencore’s Copper operations and projects in Africa.
* Perform reviews in LOA/Y+5/M+24/D+90 horizons for Glencore’s operating sites, supporting the business plan and seeking to achieve robust and feasible plans in all mining complexes.
* Prepare engineering studies aiding Resource Engineering estimates for LOA planning purposes.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams and consider the business impact of decisions on diverse groups; influence others to achieve project goals often without direct authority.
* Contribute to the development of policies and practices.
* Conduct mining fleet selection and technology optimization assessments.
* Conduct technical reviews and ensure alignment of Resource Development Planning (RDP) studies with business objectives.
* Oversee scenario analysis and the evaluation of innovative mining technologies.
* Drive continuous improvement initiatives across Glencore’s open pit operations by integrating advanced engineering methodologies and industry best practices.
* Collaborate with regional and site-based teams to support technical assessments and operational improvements.
Operating Context
* Identify and develop enabling projects to support business plans.
* Conduct gap analyses on open pit mining planning systems and capabilities.
* Benchmark global best practices and implement lessons learned across Glencore’s operations.
* Review LoA plans and monitor execution to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
* Lead participation in PFS and Feasibility Studies, ensuring high-quality technical deliverables.
* Work to agreed business deliverables, adapting to changing priorities as needed.
* Expect to travel to Glencore-owned sites in Africa.
* Autonomy and self-directed work are critical in this role.
Your Training, Skills & Expertise
* Bachelor’s Degree in Mine Engineering or a related discipline.
* 15+ years of experience in open pit mining across operations, corporate engineering, consulting, and major project studies.
* Professional certification or registration or in process of obtaining as a Chartered Engineer or equivalent in mining engineering.
* Proven track record in delivering advanced mining studies (PFS and Feasibility Studies) to an industry-leading standard.
* Extensive expertise in strategic planning, cut-off grade optimization, mine design, scheduling, and pit optimization.
* Proficiency in mining software applications, including Deswik and Whittle.
* High degree of technical open pit mining expertise and business acumen.
* Strong ability to work collaboratively with others in a technical team-based environment.
* English language proficiency (Bilingual in French is an advantage).
* Demonstrated ability to influence and lead teams across different operational and corporate environments.
