We have an exciting opportunity for a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with expertise in Haematology to join our team on a fixed-term basis. We are seeking individuals dedicated to providing a high-quality, patient-centric service, and enthusiastic about mentoring and sharing their knowledge.
Your main site of work will be the SPS Hub laboratory, working as part of a Blood Sciences team of Biomedical Scientists to provide haematology test results for patients in primary care across Somerset, as well as from Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital.
SYNLAB UK & Ireland have established experience working in partnership with the NHS to deliver and improve pathology services through joint ventures, including Southwest Pathology Services (SPS).
Our SPS team has been fundamental in making a positive difference to healthcare in Somerset for over a decade. We hold ISO15189 UKAS accreditation and are an HCPC-approved training laboratory for IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios.

Main duties of the job
As a Biomedical Scientist within the Blood Sciences team, you will perform and interpret routine and specialist testing, providing patient-centered scientific excellence while maintaining high standards in accordance with ISO15189.
You will supervise, mentor, and support other Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, and Medical Laboratory Assistants, sharing your knowledge, experience, and passion for your work.
As a registered Biomedical Scientist, you will maintain fitness to practice and participate actively in CPD. SPS commits to supporting your development in line with your professional growth and our business interests, with a dedicated training team and extensive resources available.

Job responsibilities
Participate in clinical trials, develop new tests, and validate equipment, ensuring compliance with all policies, regulatory directives, accreditation standards, and local practices.
Provide technical advice to clinical staff.
Perform and interpret routine and specialist investigations, contributing to scientific and technical activities under supervision.
Assist in ensuring compliance with policies such as CPA, MHRA, NHSCSP, HTA, HFEA, and others, utilizing laboratory systems like LIMS and Q-Pulse for data entry, review, and quality assurance.
Communicate effectively and courteously via face-to-face, telephone, or electronic methods, referring complex inquiries to senior staff as appropriate.
Participate in meetings and contribute positively to team activities.
Plan and prioritize work, training, and audits, responding to routine and urgent needs.
Support continuous professional development and the adoption of new technologies.
Report incidents and adverse events, demonstrate ongoing competency, and engage in CPD activities.
Observe safety regulations, participate in risk assessments, and ensure equipment maintenance and operation as per SOPs, including awareness of COSHH and manual handling policies.
Person Specification
Experience
* Understanding of the clinical significance of results, with the ability to interpret and act upon findings in a lone working setting.
* Confidence to make decisions in line with guidelines and procedures, including blood film morphology and coagulation assays.
Qualifications
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist, with a Biomedical degree or equivalent, evidence of CPD, and post-registration experience in Haematology.
* To qualify as a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you must have a Specialist Portfolio in Haematology, with or without Blood Transfusion, or equivalent qualifications, such as the BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice.
