We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and proactive Autism Support Worker / Personal Assistant to support a 20 year-old autistic young man with developing life skills, independence, and engagement in meaningful activities. He is highly capable but experiences challenges with communication, social interaction, and behaviour regulation. The ideal candidate will provide structured support, encourage independence, and help reduce prompt dependency.
We are looking for two days a week and once a month on a Saturday.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide 1:1 support to help with daily living skills, including personal care (if applicable), meal preparation, and household tasks.
Support independent skill-building (e.g., cooking, cleaning, shopping, and money management).
Assist with community outings, including shopping and social activities.
Reinforce positive behaviour strategies and manage behaviours of concern with a calm and structured approach.
Help build resilience and encourage focus, especially during tasks where distractions occur.
Facilitate reading and learning activities at a level appropriate for his abilities.
Maintain a structured routine with the use of visual schedules and timers.
Respect and support his special interests (e.g., Thomas the Tank Engine).
Work collaboratively with the family to implement strategies that promote progress and independence.
Requirements:
Experience working with autistic individuals, particularly those with high support needs and behaviours of concern.
Understanding of low-arousal, structured teaching, and visual supports.
Ability to encourage independence and reduce prompt dependency.
Patience, consistency, and the ability to ignore attention-seeking behaviours when necessary.
Confidence in handling challenging behaviours with a proactive and calm approach.
Knowledge of Makaton, PECs, or other communication strategies (preferred but not required).
