Bruern Abbey Senior School (HP18 9LR)
About the Role
Following the retirement of the current postholder, we seek an enthusiastic and experienced teacher of maths to lead the department and teach pupils in Years 9 - 11 across the ability range, extending the most able and supporting those who find the subject challenging, in preparation for Edexcel IGCSE. This role will no doubt be a challenging yet highly rewarding position for the right candidate, in a small, friendly school with a great team of teachers.
About the Person
Teachers at Bruern are positive, warm and compassionate. They are generous with their time and energy, and responsive to the needs of the boys. Emphasis should be placed on providing a warm, caring environment where boys are in a position to learn and make significant academic progress. Excellent communication ability with boys, parents and staff is essential. Though knowledge and experience of working with neurodivergent young people is an advantage, it is not a prerequisite for the role. A proactive approach, resilience and adaptability are key characteristics of the person who will be appointed.
About the School
Bruern Abbey is a unique family of two schools that provide specialist education and pastoral support exclusively for boys diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia or other learning difficulties. Owing to the successes of Bruern Abbey Prep School, well-established as the only mainstream prep school in the country that caters exclusively for boys diagnosed with special educational needs, Bruern Abbey Senior School launched in September 2022 on an impressive site in Chilton, Buckinghamshire, a 20-minute drive from Bruern Abbey Prep School.
Bruern Senior is committed to providing a tailored education in inspiring surroundings and maintains high expectations for all boys’ academic futures. Bespoke and expert teaching coupled with a broad appreciation of the value of an all-round education enhances boys’ self-esteem thereby creating an atmosphere conducive to success. Like Bruern Prep, Bruern Senior caters exclusively for boys diagnosed with special educational needs, maintaining its firmly held belief that learning difficulties should not preclude academic success.
Bruern Abbey is proud to be a member of the Bellevue Education group and benefits from shared best-practice and resources, in addition to focused training programmes covering all aspects of education. The School also receives specialist support from Bellevue in the areas of educational training and professional development, finance, human resources and marketing.
Boarding at Bruern
The majority of boys at Bruern board in some capacity, be it on a flexi basis or Monday - Friday, and the boarding routine defines the life of the school. Unlike most boarding schools, Bruern only offers weekly provision, with boys arriving on Monday morning and departing by 4pm on Friday. However, this short but intense week allows boys to participate in a range of sports, clubs and activities, as well benefiting from academic support engaging in the social benefits that boarding life brings. Around half of the teaching staff live on the site and support boarding in some capacity during the evenings.
