Bournemouth University operates in a highly regulated sector, with ever increasing regulatory requirements impacting all areas of its activity. The Senior Solicitor works within the Legal Services and Corporate Governance team and will be responsible for providing high quality legal support at a senior level. The postholder will report directly into the Deputy Head of Legal Services and Corporate Governance.
About the role.
The role of Senior Solicitor is to provide high quality legal advice and assistance to the University, primarily working directly with the University Executive Team (UET), Deans, Research Development and Support team, IT team, Procurement team, the University Board and University subsidiary Board members and related infrastructure to support the strategic direction of the University on a wide range of subjects.
The postholder will act as a lead legal expert in the University on general contracting including education contracts, academic partnerships, student recruitment, IT, procurement, intellectual property, data protection regulation and on the regulatory framework for a wide range of University activities, providing expert and pragmatic legal advice and guidance to senior management across the University.
Working closely with the Legal Services and Corporate Governance team, the Senior Solicitor will provide expert advice on the legal aspects of contract preparation, negotiation, submission, approval and policy, and will work alongside the rest of the Legal Services team to manage legal risk across a diverse remit.
Additionally, the post-holder will provide mentoring, training, advice and guidance to staff within and outside of the Legal Services team to ensure standard templates, operating procedures and guidance are prepared, reviewed and used in support of their role.
Who we are looking for.
Bournemouth University is seeking a fully qualified solicitor or barrister qualified to practice in England who can work unsupervised and has sufficient post-qualification experience.
We seek those with significant experience in drafting, negotiating, and advising on contracts and related risks. The postholder will also have sufficient legal knowledge and experience to grasp new and emerging areas of specialism quickly, as required by the University’s diverse remit.
Ideally, candidates will be experienced in and have significant knowledge of wider commercial law, charity law, consumer law, intellectual property law, IT contracts and procurement related contracts.
We are seeking those with exemplary verbal and written communication skills who can demonstrate their ability to work with teams of legal and governance professionals. You will be able to collaborate effectively with various internal and external stakeholders and participate in complex negotiations. The successful candidate will confidently deliver and defend legal advice with diplomacy and tact to senior stakeholders and third parties and explain the consequences to senior managers.
You will be a self-confident, self-motivating and self-reliant individual who is highly organised and takes a methodical approach in all aspects of work. You will be solution focused, with a positive and collaborative attitude, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
