Job overview
The role is to provide operational leadership, management, and administration to the Blood Transfusion service of the Analytical business, ensuring high quality pathology services are delivered by Synnovis. Reporting to the Blood Sciences, Deputy Operations Services Director, you will have a high level of accountability to ensure the successful delivery of Blood Transfusion services on all sites and in line with our corporate objectives.
This role is an exciting opportunity to provide operational strategic leadership within Synnovis Analytics for Blood Transfusion across the South-east London network including Guys & Thomas’ and Kings College Hospital NHS Trusts. In conjunction with the Blood Transfusion Operations Managers, Blood Transfusion Practitioners, Patient Blood Manager, and Clinical Leads, ensure operational delivery of laboratory services to safeguard the continuity of service.

Main duties of the job
The role will provide operational & strategic leadership for Blood Transfusion across all sites within the Synnovis Analytics Service Line. In conjunction with the Blood Transfusion Operations Managers, Blood Transfusion Practitioners, Patient Blood Manager, and Clinical Leads, ensure operational delivery of laboratory services to safeguard the continuity of service and benchmarked against national standards. The role will need to ensure the services comply with Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (BSQR), are accredited to the UKAS ISO:15189 2022 and MHRA standards.
The main duties will also include:
* Ensuring guidelines, regulations and best practice are applied consistently, supported by the Blood Transfusion Operations Managers.
* Ensuring we have the right workforce and trained competent staff to deliver an effective and safe service on all sites.
* Creating a streamlined, lean, standardised, quality assured and cost-effective service.
* Ensuring that Business continuity Plans and Major Incident Procedures are reviewed regularly and kept up to date.
* Supporting Blood Transfusion LIMS and Blood Track Haemonetics blood management solutions.
* Attend Hospital Transfusion Committee Meetings and Hospital Transfusion Team Meetings.
* Promoting patient blood management strategies to support cost-effective strategies across all sites.

This role sits within Synnovis Analytics, which is responsible for the provision of CQC regulated services and providing Pathology testing services to Synnovis’s patients and customers.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. Key Responsibilities
* Manage the reporting of budget positions across your operational areas with accountability for ensuring internal and external financial targets are achieved within the designated 5-year Operational Plan.
* Develop and negotiate new contracts to build the contract portfolio and widen the remit of services provided by Synnovis.
* Supporting business development activities within Synnovis as well as ensuring efficiency improvements and cost savings associated with the services provided.
* Drive financial performance, ensuring budgetary control across the business, including contract profit and loss and development of new service opportunities.
* Effectively manage key relationships with all stakeholders.
* Implementation of policies for service development and compliance across relevant service areas which include ensuring that the operational and business administration processes are adhered to.
* Ensuring the culture of Synnovis’s continual improvement system is engrained within teams and the organisation continues to meet the highest quality standards.
* Effectively setting and delivering the objectives for departments.
* Responsible for setting objectives and reviewing the performance of team members, identifying individual training and development needs.
* Be the professional lead for all personnel within the management remit of the post.
* Promote Quality utilising the Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with all legislative and quality requirements by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies, and local management.
* Participate in QMS activities including inspections and audits, as required.
* Develop a culture of Continuous Improvement and continuously reviewing the laboratory working practices and skills mix of resource to achieve optimum flexibility in the existing workforce, to service anticipated and existing work patterns.
* Managing change and development within a Project Management and Change Management framework.
* Lead the modernisation and monitor metrics to measure effective implementation and on-going optimal operational service delivery across the services.
* Responsible for management of employee relations issues within the service areas including handling discipline and grievance issues, the management of sickness issues and the appropriate involvement of occupational health services.
* Participate on the Silver commander rota and have accountability for the pathology services at this level in case of major incidents or emergencies out of hours, which may affect pathology service provision, in collaboration with the trust Site teams and Synnovis Gold Commander.
* Be jointly accountable for effectively developing, leading, and delivering the clinical, managerial, and R&D engagement agenda for the services with the Scientific and Clinical Leads for services within post remit.
* Ensure that there are effective risk management systems in place, in which patient safety is paramount, with assurance mechanisms which provide continuous monitoring and improvement in response to patient and customer feedback, complaints, and claims.
* Ensuring teams utilise the laboratory LIMS and its associated middleware, Quality monitoring system (Q-Pulse) and other application software according to authorised protocols including accurate and timely computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory.
* Working closely with Finance and HR Business partners to manage closely the P&L and any business change within your services.
* Continual professional development in line with UKAS and MHRA training and development guidelines.

Person specification
Qualifications
* MSc in relevant discipline or equivalent experience relevant to the role (depending on designated area)
* Educated to Postgraduate degree level in Healthcare Sciences with specialism in Blood Transfusion, or British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS) Certificate in Blood Transfusion
* HCPC registration
* FIBMS or equivalent.
* Commercial Background from Independent Healthcare Sector.
* MBA or equivalent experience.
Experience
* Extensive experience of working in a MHRA Compliant Blood Transfusion laboratory
* Experience in managing laboratories across sites.
* Demonstrable experience of building, maintaining, and utilising successful relationships with staff and Clinicians within complex organisations.
* Experience of working under Good Manufacturing Practice
* Experience of managing and leading a team.
* Experience with bringing teams from different sites together to work in a standardised way.
* Experience of attending Hospital Transfusion committee (HTC) meetings and Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT) meetings.
Skills & Knowledge
* Demonstrable knowledge of the Good Practice Guidelines for Transfusion medicine
* Demonstrable knowledge of Blood Safety & Quality Regulations (BSQR 2005).
* Demonstrable knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
* Highly effective communication skills – must be able to articulate complex issues to a wide range of recipients, both written and verbal.
* Strong interpersonal and negotiating skills, with the ability to engage, build and sustain relationships across a wide range of stakeholders.
* Demonstrable knowledge of establishing a culture of continuous improvement in a Blood Transfusion laboratory including performance of capacity analysis exercises.
* Experience in change management.
