Senior Perioperative Staff Nurse - Recovery and PACU

We currently have a vacancy for Band 6 Senior Recovery Nurse and we are seeking enthusiastic and committed individuals to join our peri-operative team. The LNWH NHS Trust utilises innovation in peri-operative practice; as such we have a five (5) bedded Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) that runs collaboratively with our Recovery Unit. The Senior Recovery Practitioner supports the Recovery Lead Practitioner in upholding and maintaining excellent quality care being delivered to patients/service users that come through Recovery.
The post holder is expected to take the nurse in charge duties as part of his/her role in facilitating efficient and timely day-to-day service delivery.
Demonstrate effective organisational, clinical, teaching and leadership skills to lead junior members of staff and colleagues.
To provide and assist in the development of safe and evidence-based specialist patient care in the department.
To provide clinical, operational, leadership, and managerial support to Recovery Lead Practitioner.
Main duties of the job
It is a rotational role between PACU and Recovery Units at Northwick Park Hospital (NPH) and Central Middlesex Hospital (CMH), part of the London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWUH). This post primarily will be focused on the immediate post anaesthetic care on adults and children that have undergone elective to complex surgery.
The post holder:
1. Is required to function as the nurse in charge ensuring provision of efficient and effective running of the Recovery department.
2. Is responsible for the post-operative care of patients following surgery and is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care including admission and discharge planning for each patient in the Recovery area without direct supervision.
3. Is expected to supervise and support qualified and unqualified staff, ensuring that all staff can provide the highest standard of care and promoting best evidence-based practice.
4. To always promote and maintain effective communication with the members of the multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with the medical team on post-operative care and facilitating timely care interventions.
5. Is expected to administer and supervise the care given to major surgical cases that require an extended recovery period.
6. To demonstrate leadership skills and experience in the management of the unit by taking in charge of the recovery department in the absence of the Recovery Lead Practitioner.

Job responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
* Responsible for the post-operative care of patients following surgery and responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation programmes of care including admission and discharge planning for each patient in the Recovery area without direct supervision.
* Provision of individualised care needs in conjunction with the anaesthetic and surgical teams.
* Recognise and appropriately respond to urgent and emergency situations.
* Provide skilled patient care, monitor, and maintain safety of patients in the Recovery area.
* Ensure work environment is safe, well-equipped, and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness especially before and after receiving patient into Recovery area.
* To update the patient care records ensuring own responsibility and accountability in maintaining accurate nursing documentation using Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system and in any other form.
* Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary clinical practice, explore new ideas and introduce positive evidence-based change in line with the local and national guidelines such as Association of Perioperative Practice (AfPP), Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI), National Institute of Care Essence (NICE), British Association of Recovery Nurses Association (BARNA) etc.
* Demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence and play an active role in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care, clinical practice, and service delivery.
* Identify, discuss, and report any relevant nursing/patient care needs with the team and to inform and involve patient with their care plans.
* To carry out all relevant nursing procedures and practices in line with the Trusts guidelines and policies including adherence to local guidelines, policies, and protocols.
Leadership and Managerial Responsibilities
* To always act as visible and effective professional role model.
* Required to function as the nurse in charge as part of the job role ensuring provision of efficient and effective running of the Recovery department.
* To support the Recovery Lead Practitioner in ensuring that staffing establishments and skill mix are adequate and appropriate for clinical demands.
* Deputise for the Recovery Lead Practitioner in his/her absence.
* Be the first point of contact in the absence of Recovery Lead Practitioner.
* To act as clinical support to Recovery Practitioners and fellow Senior Recovery Practitioners you are leading on.
* To proactively lead in identifying potential problems and taking appropriate actions to ensure the smooth running of the Recovery unit.
* Ensure regular attendance at daily safety brief, ward, and departmental meetings including clinical governance meetings.
* Contribute to the efficient use of clinical items and consumables including pharmaceutical supplies in a cost-effective and responsible manner.
* To provide support to senior management in connection with service delivery initiatives and decisions.

Education/ Qualifications
* Current and relevant registration- NMC Registered Nurse
* Teaching and Assessing Qualification or Equivalent
* Evidence of recent professional development
* Post registration course in Recovery/HDU/Critical Care Nursing
* Qualification in at least one of the accredited emergency care courses (e.g., ILS/PILS/ALS).
Knowledge & Experience
* Significant experience in surgical nursing at Band 5 to include Recovery nursing
