Job Description
A well-established and reputable organisation is seeking a dedicated and experienced Health & Safety Manager to join their leadership team in Leeds. The ideal candidate will bring a solid background in health and safety management, preferably within a warehousing, storage or distribution environment. Experience of working with woodworking machinery will also be a distinct advantage. As Health and Safety Manager, you will report directly to the board of directors and collaborate closely with senior managers to ensure a safe and compliant workplace.
Core Responsibilities:
* Spearhead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organisation's health & safety (H&S) framework, including policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
* Proactively conduct and oversee comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement effective control measures.
* Champion a culture of safety by delivering engaging H&S training programs and providing ongoing support to employees at all levels.
* Ensure full compliance with current H&S legislation, industry best practices, and relevant standards.
* Conduct regular site inspections and lead thorough incident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
* Manage the company's relationships with external H&S partners and oversee the closure of any identified non-conformances in a timely manner.
* Oversee the provision of occupational health services and ensure alignment with company policies and regulatory requirements.
* Monitor first aid and fire marshal coverage across the business, ensuring training is up-to-date and compliant with statutory requirements.
* Manage contractor safety, ensuring best practices are followed before, during, and after project completion.
* Foster proactive safety behaviors by investigating near misses and advising managers on preventative measures to eliminate any chance of reoccurrence.
Key Skills and Experience:
* Essential: NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)
* Proven experience in a Health & Safety Management role, ideally within warehousing or distribution.
* Desirable: Experience with woodworking machinery and associated safety standards.
* In-depth knowledge of HSE legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills.
* A proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Environmental Management (Advantageous):
* Maintain environmental compliance in accordance with relevant legislation and guidelines.
* Support and maintain company accreditations (e.g., ISO 14001, PEFC, FSC).
* Promote sustainability initiatives within the organisation.
* Conduct regular environmental audits and reviews of policies and procedures.
* Liaise with site management teams to ensure environmental compliance.
* Coordinate and prepare for environmental accreditation audits.
* Promote sustainable practices and energy savings across business activities.

Essential Requirements:
* NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)
* A degree in Health and Safety (or a related field) would be advantageous, but is not essential. An OH&S Level 6 NVQ in health and safety management would also be advantageous.
* Extensive technical knowledge of H&S standards, regulations, and procedures.
* A full driving license.
* The ability to quickly recognise problems and implement effective solutions.
