Job Summary
This post provides the opportunity for a physician with an interest in oncology to contribute to an ongoing academic GSTT-sponsored lung cancer research project, participate in the delivery of clinical trials, and experience modern multi-disciplinary outpatient oncology clinic care, including the delivery of systemic anti-cancer therapy. This activity takes place in the modern facilities of the Cancer Centre at Guy's Hospital. The post is suitable for a candidate with full general medical qualification, seeking to progress their specialist training in oncology, who has an interest and preferably prior experience in the conduct of clinical research.
Clinical Aims
1. To bring together the majority of cancer care and translational research under one roof, ensuring seamless care for patients and collaboration among staff on diagnosing, treating, and applying research into cancer.
2. To improve supportive care, patient information, and complementary therapies at each stage of the patient pathway to enhance quality of life during treatment and into recovery and survivorship.
3. To provide an outstanding environment that will 'lift the spirits' of patients, relatives, and staff.
4. To deliver compassionate care and a world-class service.
Main Duties of the Job
An indicative weekly job plan for this post is as follows:
1. Monday: Clinical trial work and academic research in lung cancer in never smokers (LCINS)
2. Tuesday: Clinical trials work and academic research in LCINS
3. Wednesday: Clinical trials work or academic research in LCINS. Wednesday pm: Thoracic Malignancies Medical Oncology Clinic
4. Thursday: Academic research in LCINS and on-site cover for clinical trials as required.
5. Friday: Lung cancer MDM and Thoracic Malignancies Medical Oncology Clinic
The academic work relating to lung cancer in never smoker research will involve collaboration with Dr. Georgiou, Guys cancer charity, who funds this project, and other existing oncology and university collaborators, statistical analysis and data interpretation, writing of peer-reviewed journal articles, project reports, and grant applications, as well as presentation of findings.
The clinical trial and medical oncology clinics will be outpatient-based to ensure safe administration of systemic anti-cancer therapy, with particular emphasis on the support of lung cancer trials. The Fellow will work closely with the lung clinical research team, supporting the enrollment of patients and the collection of quality trial data.
In addition to supporting trial patients, there will be an expectation that the postholder will engage in outpatient activities relating to thoracic medical oncology clinics, including preparing clinic lists, arranging outpatient investigations and referrals, and supporting the Clinical Nurse Specialist team.
Participation is expected in clinical and other service activities with the objective of ensuring a high standard of patient care. While this post does not attract a training number, it provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the outpatient care of cancer patients and would be suitable for a candidate who has completed general medical training and is considering specialist training in oncology. Some prior experience of both oncology and clinical drug development is essential.
Clinical supervision will be provided by Dr. Spyros Gennatas and academic supervision by Dr. Alex Georgiou. The post holder is required to follow Trust policies and procedures, which are regularly updated.
