Employment type: Permanent full-time.
Employment basis: The role is expected to be a full-time position.
Salary: Competitive salary, dependent on experience, plus bonus and other benefits.
Sizewell C is one of the largest megaprojects in the UK, at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy. Following the success of Hinkley Point C, the SZC project has obtained planning approval and government financing support, and site preparation activities are ongoing. The project is now seeking private investment with a view to starting construction in 2025. SZC’s first top-level safety report, the Pre-Construction Safety Report (PCSR), will enable the release of 2 project milestones: First Nuclear Safety Concrete milestone and Nuclear Island Concrete milestone. Therefore, PCSR’s production will be SZC DA’s priority over the next few years.
This vacancy is within the Safety Case Branch of SZC Design Authority. The Design Authority Safety Case Engineer will report to the safety case integration group lead of DA and will be responsible for leading the development of the various sections of the PCSR under Licence Condition 14 arrangements. A background in fault studies is desirable to lead on safety analysis sections of the PCSR. Candidates with a broader range of skills are welcomed in anticipation of future vacancies in the Safety Case Branch.
Principal Accountabilities
1. As the owner of the safety case during the design and construction phases, advise the external and internal regulators and responsible designer on the adequacy of the safety case and associated deliverables.
2. As the section lead for PCSR, govern the technical ownership of responsible topic areas relating to the safety case, set safety case strategy, manage a team of safety case authors, and lead sections through the safety case life cycle: authoring, peer review, verification, internal regulator, external regulator, nuclear safety committee, etc.
3. Act as the intelligent customer for the safety case by undertaking technical oversight over the licensing, procurement, manufacture, construction, commissioning, and operation phases of the station lifecycle.
4. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including EDF SA, EDF Nuclear Operations, EDF Hinkley Point C, EDF Nuclear Services, the Responsible Designer (EDF SA, Edvance and CNEPE), internal regulators, Office for Nuclear Regulation, and supply chain partners.
5. SZC is a replicated design from HPC. Provide influence and direction to maximize the benefit of replication.

We hope that the applicants would have the following skills:
1. Degree or equivalent in engineering, science, or maths.
2. Experience in the nuclear industry or other highly regulated industries is highly desirable.
3. Demonstrable evidence of complex safety case management/production within the nuclear industry, including design, substantiation, verification & validation, and safety justification of systems, structures, and components is highly desirable.
4. Knowledge/experience of key related nuclear safety case disciplines is preferred but not essential (Fault Studies, Normal Operations, Classification and categorisation, Civils, Probabilistic Safety, Human Factors, System Reliability, Deterministic Safety Principles, etc.). Candidates with a broader background are welcomed in anticipation of future vacancies opening in the Safety Case Branch.
5. Ability to identify issues and develop solutions in the context of nuclear plant construction through to operation.
6. Ability to interpret the big picture, distill a range of source data and analysis to define, set scope, and strategically plan the delivery of the safety case.
