The Research Excellence and Governance Manager is pivotal to the management and enhancement of the University's research activities. This role includes overseeing the Research Support Team to achieve strategic objectives such as Research Degree Awarding Powers, improved REF submissions, and increased research income.
The post holder will lead the effective administration of research, ensuring proactive and flexible support for academics and research students. Using their extensive sector knowledge, they will champion best practices, challenge existing methodologies, and align operations with BNU's THRIVE 2028 strategy. The position demands initiative, adaptability, and the ability to operate independently in a dynamic environment.

Responsible for: Research Professional Service Employees (PSEs) within the RED Unit
Job Purpose:
The Research Excellence and Governance Manager is responsible for the management, coordination, delivery, evaluation, and enhancement of the University's research activity, providing a full service to the Schools on all aspects relating to research.
Main Duties & Responsibilities of the role:
* To provide high quality project management and administrative support for the development, submission, and completion of BNU's application for Research Degree Awarding powers.
* In partnership with academic staff and senior managers, provide sector knowledge and support to ensure a high-quality REF submission.
* Ensure research data is collected and managed appropriately to enable RDAP application and optimize REF outputs.
* Implement a process of output quality evaluation to support academic refinement of publication strategies.
* Support identification, enhancement, and measurement of research impact for the development of high-quality impact case studies.
* Ensure accurate research activity returns to Research England and provide support for external audits related to research.
* Manage the effective work of the Research Unit PSEs in providing professional support for research policy and strategy.
* Monitor research performance against institutional plans and provide regular reports on research activity.
* Work with Impact centre and UOA Leads to provide timely and accurate advice on sources of external funds.
* Manage the University's research development budget.
* Oversee the development and approval of regulations and quality procedures related to research provision.
* Work with the Finance Directorate to develop procedures for tracking research income.
* Enhance the research culture within the University.
* Ensure effective dissemination of all aspects of research activity through the website and repository.
* Maintain awareness of new developments across the sector through engagement with relevant networks.
