Atlantic58 is a small but rapidly growing consultancy based in the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. We provide a range of professional environmental consultancy services, focusing on projects within the unique social, cultural, and ecological environment of the Western Isles. Clients range from local community development trusts to global multinationals and cover a wide variety of sectors including space, renewables, aquaculture, and crofting. A position is now available for a Graduate Ecological Consultant to support with delivery of an increasing and diverse workload, covering small community projects, complex commercial EIA developments, and large-scale conservation initiatives. The Role The role is for a graduate who will have graduated within four years of the appointment date (subject to agreement: Spring / Summer 2025) to join the existing ecological team. Applicants will have as a minimum, a technical environmental science degree in an ecological or environmental discipline. To develop emerging and growing work requirements, the successful applicant will demonstrate specific knowledge or experience in habitat-based knowledge e.g. peatland restoration / management, habitat restoration, vegetation surveys or botany. Other ecological skillsets will also be considered. Graduates with postgraduate qualifications are particularly encouraged given the potential development and innovation opportunities. The role will be variable and requires a flexible, self-motivated candidate with the capacity to learn quickly and passion for the natural environment. In line with the multidisciplinary nature of the business, candidates are expected to develop a range of skills to support the wider development of the company, including expanding ecological survey skills and report writing. The role is based on the Isle of Lewis, with potential for extensive site work and therefore it is important that the successful candidate will be based within the Hebrides, however some work away from home may be required. Core Responsibilities Undertake a range of ecological surveys, data gathering, reporting and analysis of ecological information. Contribute to projects as required (desk assessments, baseline data, EIA and technical reporting). Contribute to and, where appropriate, take ownership of day-to-day project / site work to support projects. Use QGIS to generate maps, maintaining an accurate recording system and filing convention. Develop personal and professional competencies with a relevant trade association e.g. CIEEM. Undertake training to develop skills across a range of disciplines, and continual professional development. The Location The office is set within Lews Castle Grounds, Isle of Lewis - a designated Garden and Designed Landscape - covering over 270 hectares of woodland and ornamental gardens. The immediate surroundings include a network of coastal, moorland and woodland paths, mountain bike trails, a salmon and trout fishery and golf club. We are located a few metres from Lews Castle and the Museum Tasglann nan Eilean. Our office space is dog friendly and includes a private enclosed outdoor area. We also form part of the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI) campus in Stornoway and have close links with academia both for collaborative course development and research opportunities. Essential The candidate will hold as a minimum, a relevant technical environmental or ecological science degree. Excellent communication and confidence for client communication, contractor and stakeholder liaison. Good IT and excellent reporting skills with high levels of attention to detail. Examples of reporting will be requested as part of the interview process. Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and adapt to a range of project requirements. Relevant experience in a core ecological discipline, including but not limited to, peatland management /restoration, habitat management, vegetation survey (NVC, UK Habitat Classification, Phase 1), botany etc. A full UK driving licence and ability to travel. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. Desirable Post graduate qualification. Knowledge / experience of BNG. Other ecological knowledge e.g. ornithology, protected species, freshwater ecology, marine biology. Other environmental survey experience (e.g. remote sensing, geotechnical, hydrology). Competent in data analysis and mapping using QGIS (ArcGIS also acceptable). Understanding of environmental legislation, regulation and good practice. The candidate will have, or be willing, to work towards a relevant professional membership. Salary and benefits Hybrid working options and TOIL. Full time (35 hours per week) for initial 12-month fixed term contract. Salary range £24,000 to £26,000 Initial one-year fixed term contract with potential for permanent contract thereafter subject to review. Relocation assistance package available if required.
