CNWL (Milton Keynes) is delighted to offer suitable applicants an exciting opportunity to develop their career by undertaking the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) Health Visiting Course. This is run as a joint programme with Northampton University. The course is split between clinical practice and University attendance. Mileage for practice days and university attendance will be covered from the Milton Keynes 0-19 Team base.
This is an exciting time for Health Visiting in Milton Keynes as we look to the future and develop services designed to meet the needs of our diverse and growing population. We work as an integrated 0-19 service implementing new ways of working to support the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme to families in MK.
You must be a Registered Nurse or Midwife with a current NMC registration and have an interest in addressing the health needs of children and families. The course is run at Post Graduate Diploma (Level 7), see person specification for application requirements. Applicants must also be holders of a valid driving licence and have access and use of a car for the duration of the training.
Consideration to be paid at Band 6 during the training can be given depending on previous relevant experience, subject to an Inter Authority Transfer confirmation.
Main duties of the job
The course commences in September 2025 and is offered on a full-time basis. Please ensure that you indicate on your application if you have commenced the course previously in another university and the reason you did not complete.
The post of Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies as a qualified nurse/midwife to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

About us
The programme will enable SCPHN students to learn and work towards gaining the standards of proficiency for entry into the NMC register as Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). In collaboration with Northampton University, the Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor ensure suitable learning environments and create opportunities which will enable the student to develop knowledge, skills and competencies to take on the role of a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within the discipline of Health Visiting by the end of the programme.
Once qualified, there is an expectation that you will work for CNWL in a substantive post. We currently offer a 6% recruitment and retention premia for substantive Health Visitors (T&C's apply, further information given at interview).

Job responsibilities
The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as a NMC registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. The following summarises core responsibilities, but is not an exhaustive list:
* Fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with University regulations and successful completion of the course.
* With the support of the Practice Assessor & Practice Supervisor, link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation.
* Demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging national, regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines as they pertain to chosen pathway.
* Develop/build on skills of individual caseload management and leadership/management skills within a team, taking into consideration the abilities of skill mix.
* Work within University regulations pertaining to academic work and student conduct.
* Work within employing organisation policies as they pertain to the relevant clinical setting.
* Work within employing organisation policies relating to employee responsibilities.
* Proactively seek learning opportunities and be creative, adaptable, and innovative in response to complex and challenging situations.
Person Specification
Experience
* Demonstrate keen interest in public health and working in the community.
* Community experience or other experience relevant to Health Visiting.
Knowledge & Skills
* Understanding of public health with knowledge of the Healthy Child Programme.
* Knowledge of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to work as a member of a team, and on own initiative in line with national and local standards and procedures.
Education Qualification Training
* Educated to degree level or equivalent.
* Current Nursing or Midwifery NMC Registration.
* Evidence of recent study at degree level or equivalent.
