Job Title: Personal Care Assistants
Location: Riding Mill - NE44
Hours: Two Personal Care Assistants for a teenage 20 hr/wk @ £13.09/hr
We are a family of four looking for good-humoured and flexible personal assistants to provide support at home for our 16-year-old son. Sometimes the role will involve supporting one parent with our son’s care routine, and at other times it will be to work with another PA whilst parents are out. Our son has significant disabilities which require specialist care. He can talk (he rarely stops) and loves to laugh and joke. It’s like a pantomime all the time! He is a full-time wheelchair user and requires support with all day-to-day activities.
Our son likes to play musical instruments, appropriate board games/card games, PlayStation/iPad games, and loves animals. He would like to mostly play at home talking about his favourite musicians, but there may be occasions to visit local farms/owl sanctuaries or swimming at the local pool. Transport would be via public transport or one parent would drive for trips with support from one PA. There may be occasional opportunities to accompany the family on holiday in the future.
Main Duties
* Support this fun-loving teenager with up to 20 hours per week, per PA, with accessing appropriate activities in and around his community.
* Build a secure relationship with the young person and his family.
* Encourage independence and pursue activities of his choice.
* Support with basic meal preparation (heating a meal, or making a sandwich, etc.) and help with feeding.
* Understanding of tonic/clonic epilepsy preferred; however, full training will be provided.
* Understanding of allergies preferred; however, full training will also be provided.
* Emergency medication will be required as part of this role, and full training will be provided.
* Provide all personal care needs at home where we have a ceiling track hoist in the bedroom and bathroom.
* Support with all transfers using ceiling track hoist or mobile hoist if outside in the garden.
* Support with all transfers in and out of his wheelchair using ceiling track or mobile hoist.
Hours
Up to 20 hours a week per PA – hours, days, and times can be arranged more flexibly during school holidays. During term time, we are ideally looking for hours on a Friday afternoon/evening, a Saturday morning (plus afternoon if available), and a Sunday morning, along with 1-2 post school sessions during the week. Ideally, one PA would be available to welcome our son home from the school bus at 15:30 and help him have a snack and drink. In the holidays, we can be flexible depending on PA availability.
Requirements
* Experience working alongside children with disabilities is preferred; however, the most important factor is your personality and ability to be flexible and have fun.
* High degree of initiative and creativity.
* Great sense of humour and enjoyment in the role.
* Experience of autism is useful.
Rates of Pay
£13.09 per hour. 5.6 weeks holiday (pro rata). Out of pocket expenses will be met by the Employer. This post is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check and references (cost to be met by Northumberland County Council).
