RESPIRATORY INTERVENTION
Band 3 Nursing Assistant
The Respiratory Intervention service at the John Radcliffe Hospital currently has a vacancy for a full-time band 3 nursing assistant. The service provides bronchoscopy and pleural procedures to a variety of patients.
We are looking for a highly motivated person who would like to join our enthusiastic team. Working in a fast-paced environment, you will be required to rotate through the recovery area and into our procedure room to maintain a full range of support skills.
The role requires an enthusiastic, hardworking, and flexible person, with excellent communication skills. This would enable you to be involved with and undertake a variety of tasks to assist with the smooth delivery of care to ensure the best outcome for our patients. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate compassion and commitment to deliver high standards of care.

Tuesday 08:00 - 18:00
Wednesday 08:00 - 12:30
Thursday 08:00 - 18:00
Friday 08:00 - 12:30

Main duties of the job
The Respiratory Intervention unit performs a variety of respiratory procedures, such as bronchoscopy and pleural interventions, to aid cancer diagnosis and symptom management of patients with cancer and other conditions. The nursing assistant will be required to assist the nursing and medical team in the procedure room and in the recovery area. They will assist the nurses to provide a high standard of patient care, which is patient focussed and in consultation with the patient, their relatives and the nursing/medical team.

Job responsibilities
Under the supervision of the nursing staff, complete admission documentation prior to their procedure, taking into account their physical health and psychological needs.
Escalate any patient issues to the nursing /medical team prior to their procedure.
To have an understanding of different consent forms and when they are used.
To have an understanding of the use of WHO checklists and to participate in answering the questions when the WHO is performed.
Assist the nursing and medical team with procedures.
Enable patients undergoing respiratory procedures to tolerate the examination providing comfort and reassurance.
Monitor patients during their procedure and in recovery, performing and documenting observations (following assessment of competence), recognising deteriorating patients and escalating concerns immediately to nursing/medical team.
Perform mouth suction on patients during bronchoscopy procedures.
Participate in the safe manual handling and positioning of patients.
Ensure that all bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy equipment is cleaned and maintained correctly, according to manufacturer guidelines.
Ensure bronchoscopy scopes are available and ready for procedure lists, by liaising with endoscopy.
Perform phlebotomy (training will be provided).
Perform blood glucose monitoring and escalate any anomalies.
Able to recognise and use PPE appropriately for infectious patients. (All staff must be fit tested to specific FFP3 masks).
To recognise and assist nursing staff in the response of an emergency situation.
Recognise when a patients condition changes and seek advice and expertise from registered practitioners in accordance with Trust policy.
Respond swiftly to individuals who require immediate assistance, are in pain, distressed, reporting to a registered practitioner.
