JOB SUMMARY: The City of Birmingham is seeking highly qualified Senior Traffic Control Technicians to oversee and participate in the installation of traffic signals, streetlights, cameras, and signs. The role focuses on electronic work, including programming microchips, traffic signal phases, and troubleshooting electronic traffic control systems and emergency sirens. Responsibilities also include creating detailed traffic reports for intersection modifications, communicating changes to relevant parties, and assigning work orders for installations and repairs to subordinate staff. Ideal candidates will demonstrate expertise in traffic control systems and leadership in coordinating technical tasks.

Birmingham $22.55 - $34.99 USD Hourly
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
1. Valid driver's license (Must be able to acquire a Class B CDL within the first year of employment).
2. Work experience establishing work zone safety when conducting work in a traffic environment.
3. Work experience applying and adhering to MUTCD in the maintenance and installation of traffic signals.
4. Work experience reading and interpreting electrical or electronic schematics and blueprints.
5. Work experience in electrical and electronics troubleshooting (e.g., working with voltages of 120v to 480v, using a multimeter, working with electricity and electrical circuits).
6. Work experience operating the controls of a bucket truck.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Merit System agencies:
1. IMSA Certification Level One or higher
2. Journeyman Electrician License.
3. Associates degree or higher in Electronics or a closely related field.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Communicates with coworkers, supervisors and other officials by using verbal and written communication in order to complete work orders in an efficient manner.
2. Performs electrical work (e.g., running wires, cutting loops, etc.) associated with the installation, maintenance, and replacement of traffic signals, street lights, ballpark lights, and emergency sirens utilizing the National Electrical Code and related tools.
3. Performs electronic work (e.g., programming microchips, programming traffic signal phases, etc.) associated with the installation, programming, and troubleshooting of electronic traffic control cabinets and emergency sirens.
4. Oversees and participates in the installation of traffic signals, intersections, street lights, cameras and street signs.
5. Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
6. Performs administrative duties such as documenting subordinates’ hours and performance, estimating material, time, and staffing requirements for projects, and monitoring condition of equipment and inventory of supplies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job involves moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both within employer-owned facilities such as workshops, warehouses, or stations, and in field locations such as external construction worksites. Work involves the use of various hand tools and may expose workers to weather conditions and potentially hazardous conditions.
