Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer II is accountable for the mechanical design and performance of hydro turbine equipment. They are responsible for the development of cost-effective custom equipment designs and achievement of the budgeted costs at the final design stage. The Mechanical Engineer II will identify deficiencies in mechanical processes and develop improvements. This position will design and develop prototypes, use CAD, develop, initiate, and manage phases of project, and collaborate with Project Managers. They will show advancement in engineering capabilities, building on accumulated experience.
Main Responsibilities

* Responsible for the mechanical design and layout of custom hydro turbine equipment. Interface with complete powerhouse equipment scope to include generator, turbine, balance-of-plant equipment, and civil structure as required.
* Perform classical stress calculations and finite element analyses on critical turbine components.
* Prepare structural analysis reports for presentation to internal and external customers.
* Produce CAD drawings and bill of materials for all new and rehabilitated components to include fabrications, castings, forgings, and machined components.
* Analyze various design requirements and recommend possible solutions or alternate constructions.
* Serve as the technical lead on increasingly complex projects with limited support from more senior engineers.
* Conduct internal design reviews with multi-disciplinary teams.
* Conduct external design reviews with customers and vendors.
* Support additional project requirements as needed for Project Management, Proposals, Procurement, Operations, and Field Service departments.
* Coordinate with Operations and Field Service departments to resolve technical problems that arise during manufacture or installation of equipment.
* Participate and/or lead, as-needed, meetings with external customers or vendors and lead technical discussions.
* Perform field testing and troubleshooting of turbine installations under the direction of experienced engineers.
* Write Operations and Maintenance Manuals and support Field Service with installation and commissioning work.
* Travel to sites independently to support site kickoffs and inspections.
* Travel to vendors independently to support quality or scope of work inspections as needed.
* Assign appropriate work to co-ops, Engineering Trainees, and Engineer I and support development and training as necessary.
* Satisfy ISO Quality Standards as it relates to the design function.
Development Responsibilities
* Development of mechanical analysis tools or methods as directed by Manager, Turbine Design Engineering.
Authorities
* Approval of shop and field non-conformances and disposition of non-conformances with limited input from more senior engineers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Possess a firm grasp on the industry as a whole and stay up to date on evolving trends in hydro power technologies.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
* Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required.
* Two to six years’ experience.
Licenses or Certifications Required
* None.
Environment and Working Conditions
* Normal Office Environment.
Travel Requirements (percent)
* Up to 10%.
