ROLE SUMMARY
We are currently looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Research and Development team, based in Dunfermline. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly motivated team of engineers working for a company who are the world leaders in retinal imaging products. The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer will provide strategic project and technical leadership in the design and development of mechanical and optomechanical systems for both new and existing retinal imaging products. This role involves collaborating with a multi-disciplinary R&D team to drive innovation and ensure the successful execution of projects that enhance product performance and reliability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Drive concept generation, analysis, and development of mechanical and optomechanical system architectures and associated innovative solutions in accordance with design control process.
2. Lead all aspects of mechanical design and verification, including: input to and analysis of technical requirements and specifications; definition of verification of designs; execution of tests; and ensuring readiness for handover to suppliers and manufacturing teams.
3. Responsible for Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA) and design review.
4. Peer review of designs of other R&D mechanical engineers.
5. Develop the formulation of the mechanical engineering roadmap in terms of emerging technologies for performance improvements and cost reduction.
6. Technical leadership for continuous improvement of existing product range through design analysis and innovative technology solutions.
7. Responsible for work breakdown estimates and timely delivery of design solutions for mechanical systems and modules against project requirements.
8. Communicate design intent, operational workflow and production support for designed mechanical systems to product engineering and production staff.
9. Leadership of continuous improvement of processes used in mechanical design and development.
10. Provide customer support in a pro-active manner in the form of creative solutions to problems encountered with the product.
11. Carry out effective line management of direct reports, including regular team member appraisals and progress review.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
12. Educated to degree level in mechanical engineering, opto-mechanical engineering or equivalent education gained through work experiences.
13. Experience in complex mechanical and opto-mechanical design in product development, including qualification activities – Minimum 10 years.
14. Strong competence and extensive experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD modelling (SolidWorks preferably).
15. Experience of ownership of delivering design solutions with significant elements of cross functional design out with the mechanical expertise (e.g. optical, electronic).
16. Experience in leading a small team, including all aspects of people management.
17. 3+ years of experience in leading development projects in a highly regulated industry, including working in an Agile environment. Includes estimation, planning, resourcing, execution, stakeholder engagement, tracking and delivery.
18. Thorough knowledge of opto-mechanical system design and mechanical manufacturing processes.
19. Good knowledge of DfX (Design for Manufacturing, Assembly and Test).
20. Practical skills in assembly, test and root-cause analysis of mechanical systems and modules.
21. Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills.
22. Familiarity with ISO and FDA Medical Device Design Control processes.
23. An ability to work within tight deadlines and manage time effectively.
