Job Function
To operate a cash register and checkstand to provide the store’s customers with the most accurate and efficient checkout service possible; to perform stocking and other duties, as assigned, depending upon the amount of time available, business volume, and other criteria according to company policy; to ensure that the work shift contributes to the financial best interests of the store.
Duties And Responsibilities
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. General
o Observe all store rules and company policies;
o Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe company dress regulations;
o Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by store manager;
o Adhere to all local, state and federal health and civil code regulations;
o Be qualified, knowledgeable, able and prepared to perform all of the duties of an experienced grocery clerk when assigned or requested to do so;
o Clean checkstands daily;
o Count cash drawer at both the “start” and “end” of the actual work shift;
o Add up or record the purchases of a customer into a cash register efficiently and accurately;
o Be knowledgeable in and able to recognize or differentiate between all of the various types of produce merchandise carried in the store;
o Assist customers with bulk products that they may have difficulty in handling;
o Collect money in the form of cash or checks from customers and tender accurate change;
o Process all of the various types of sales transactions accepted by the store;
o Process bottle deposits and/or refunds, as applicable;
o Handle lottery and postage stamp transactions, as applicable;
o Bag or package merchandise according to established company policies;
o Stock merchandise in assigned sections;
o Handle damaged or spoiled products and return-to-stocks according to company policy;
o Comply fully with all safety policies and procedures;
o Perform all front end duties according to company policies, procedures and practices;
o Assist in training personnel when assigned;
o Control excessive use of utilities and water;
o Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service.
2. Bookkeeping
o Record all shift hours worked on time card according to company policy;
o Ring all sales into cash register in accordance with Company cash handling procedures;
o Verify all customer IDs presented;
o Notify manager promptly of any irregularities or discrepancies;
o Use correct pricing as listed in the store’s Pricing Guide;
o Record on designated forms any price discrepancies.
3. Merchandising
o Keep shelves in assigned sections fully stocked and faced;
o Ensure that all front end displays are clean, neat and uncluttered;
o Keep merchandise rotated in accordance with store policy;
o Follow approved procedures for price marking and restocking.
4. Maintenance
o Maintain general housekeeping and sanitation standards;
o Assist in keeping all checkout, sales and storage areas clean;
o Use and maintain equipment in good working order.
5. Security
o Adhere to company policy pertaining to excessive cash in registers;
o Observe security standards by staying alert;
o Secure register at all times when leaving it unattended.
6. Personnel
o Assist in training associates and co-workers when directed;
o Maintain good communications in the department and throughout the organization;
o Notify department manager of personnel situations or policy violations.

Education And/or Experience
* High school education preferred with successful completion of an apprenticeship/training program; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Mathematical Skills
* Be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, percentages, ratios;
* Be able to accurately complete required reports.
Language Skills
* Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word;
* Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language.
Reasoning Ability
* Ability to solve practical problems;
* Ability to interpret a variety of instructions.
Other Skills Or Requirements
* Be fully knowledgeable and thoroughly familiar with the types of merchandise carried in the store;
* Be able to pass a standard drug test;
* Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner.
Physical Requirements
* Regularly required to sit; stand; and use hands;
* Must frequently walk, talk or hear;
* Must occasionally exert or lift up to 50 pounds;
* Successful performance requires specific vision abilities.
Work Environment
* The work environment includes occasional exposure to refrigerated frozen food storage areas;
* Access to break rooms, offices and all employee restrooms require ascending/descending a flight of stairs;
* Typically, the noise level in the work environment is moderate.
