BBC STUDIOS - CHAPERONE POOL APPLICATION LINK
Who can apply?
* This opportunity is for people who are interested in, or have previous chaperone experience, to join a talent pool.
* You don't need to have worked as a chaperone previously, but we are looking for people who have worked with under 18s. This includes (but not limited to) child minders, classroom assistants, teachers, nursery workers, and those who run or work at children's activity / out of school classes.
* If you are successful but have limited/no chaperone experience you will work under the supervision of a Lead Chaperone. They will guide and support you to ensure you feel confident in the job you're being asked to do.
* If you have previously, or are currently, working with us as a Chaperone you still need to apply for this pool to ensure everyone who works with us has completed the same level of checks and training.
What is the Kids & Family chaperone pool?
* The pool will provide a database resource to Kids & Family productions looking to hire Chaperones. It is not a live job, and there is no guarantee that successful candidates will get work from the pool.
* If and when there are opportunities, we will contact people in the pool. We may contact everyone, or select people who have specific skills or interests for the position available. If you are not available it will not affect us calling you for future opportunities.
Main responsibilities
* Supervise performance, behaviour and conduct of children under your supervision on a daily basis
* Respond to problems and refer up when necessary
* Ensure children use designated children's areas only
* Monitor and complete paperwork such as time sheets
* Check child licences for cast and supporting artists
* Monitor and respond to problems regarding behaviour on and off set - escalate to Lead Chaperone if needed
* Ensure young people feel safe and looked after at all times. You are the person to whom the child should look for guidance, protection, clarification and support
* Overnight stays as required (if you're not able to do overnights you can still apply for the pool but please specify on your application when asked)
Are you the right candidate?
* You must have experience of working with children.
* Confident communicator; engaging with and managing young people, and advocating for them as required.
* Feel confident to raise concerns and challenge inappropriate behaviour - with young people or senior members of crew such as directors.
* Be approachable and a good listener. Someone young people feel confident confiding in and can trust to support them responsibly.
* Have a positive outlook and relaxed attitude to change. There are often last minute changes on TV productions and we look for people who can adapt quickly whilst supporting our younger cast members to do the same.
* Set an example. We look for people who set a positive tone - encouraging young people to mirror their behaviour.
* Keep a calm head - not feeding off other's energies, and remaining calm when faced with stressful or high pressure situations.
* A natural problem solver - television productions regularly run over schedule or don't go to plan. We look for individuals who naturally like to fix problems rather than find them.
What is the application process?
* This is a thorough process to ensure we vet everyone who works with children on our productions.
* This will include answering questions relating to your relevant skills, experience, specialisms and motivation for wanting to join the pool.
* Due to the demand of the pool, chaperones who have worked with us within the last 12 months and can provide a reference from a BBC/BBC Studios staff member will go straight into the pool.
* If you don't fit this criteria, you will be invited you to attend an interview or assessment if you are selected after answering the application questions.
* If you are not selected we will email you to let you know you haven't been successful. This does not prevent you from applying again at a later date.
* We are happy to provide feedback to those who are not selected. Please email chaperonepool@bbc.com to request.
* Once you are in the pool your name will be listed in a chaperone database which is available for all BBC & BBC Studios productions and projects.
* Please note, however, that being in the pool doesn't guarantee work and you might not get any work at all from this pool. We hope this isn't the case but given the database nature of the system, being selected will depend on multiple factors including your availability, location, level of experience, type of experience, specialisms etc.
Is chaperoning right for me?
* Whilst fulfilling and exciting for people who enjoy working with children, Chaperone work can be ad-hoc and unpredictable.
* At times you will be required on set or location for several weeks at a time; on other occasions it can be a single day or a couple of days depending on the production needs.
* Some shoots will be on a set which is well facilitated, warm and contained. Others will be on location, outdoors, without the creature comforts of studio facilities. Days can last up to 10+ hours with long periods of waiting around. You may also be required to stay away overnight.
* Chaperone work is generally carried out via a freelance contract. This means you will need to organise your own tax and won't be entitled to benefits like sick pay or maternity leave.

* We will also provide bespoke BBC Chaperone training to everyone who makes it in to the pool.
* It will be your responsibility to pay for your checks, and any licences and any external training required, but once you've completed everything you will be able to take on chaperone work outside the BBC as well as with us.
* We cannot offer work to anyone who does not have the necessary legal requirements.
Pay & expenses
* Rates can vary depending on factors including production budget, genre, business area, location, level of experience and working hours.
* Whilst working away from the production base you can expect to have travel, accommodation and food expenses provided.
