The University of Exeter is seeking a Research IT Officer specialising in High Performance Computing to join our Research IT team. In this role, you will support, enhance, and evolve our HPC infrastructure, ensuring it delivers maximum value to our academic community. You’ll play a key part in maintaining and optimising our systems, driving service development, and improving processes to ensure researchers can achieve exceptional outcomes. Key Responsibilities As a Research IT Officer in HPC, your responsibilities will include: Patching and monitoring: Maintaining the health, security, and performance of HPC systems through effective patching and proactive monitoring. Service development: Collaborating with colleagues to evolve the HPC service, aligning with researcher needs and University strategy. Process improvement through automation: Identifying and implementing automation opportunities to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency. Performance tuning: Fine-tuning systems to optimise computational performance and resource utilisation. User engagement and training: Supporting researchers in maximising HPC capabilities, providing training, and helping to develop their technical skills. Accounting and reporting: Monitoring resource usage, managing cost recovery, and ensuring transparency around resource allocation. The Ideal Candidate We’re looking for someone who has: Experience in HPC system administration, including job scheduling, performance monitoring, and troubleshooting in a Linux environment. A proactive and innovative approach to service improvement, with a focus on automation and user experience. The ability to engage effectively with researchers, understanding their requirements and helping them translate their research goals into computational solutions. Knowledge of accounting processes related to resource usage and cost recovery. A collaborative mindset, strong communication skills, and a commitment to working as part of a supportive team.
