This post is an established 12 month fellowship (post CCT): Post CCT Fellow in Benign UGI Fellowship with specialist interest in UGI and anti-reflux surgery This post is designed for senior benign upper GI trainees who are post CCT to prepare for a formal consultant appointment. The post holder will be operating at the level of a consultant but with mentoring and teaching by experienced upper GI / bariatric and emergency surgeons. Operations trained in will include, but not limited to: first on-call emergency general surgery operations Complex cholecystectomies Common bile duct explorations & Choledochoscopy Anti-reflux and hiatus hernias pH and Manometry The successful candidate may also be required to support the on-call rota but fully supported by a second on-call consultant, who themselves will be in the hospital carrying out the elective duties, consistent with 7 day working. The successful candidate will take advantage of consultant operating lists for complex surgery in their sub specialist choice to further develop their skills. Main duties of the job The main duties and responsibilities of the appointee will be: To support the general surgery on-call acting as the first on-call Consultant. To act and demonstrate outstanding clinical capability expected of a post-CCT fellow across all service areas. To work with the existing upper GI and endoscopists across both Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals to provide and efficient and effective service. There is a large malignant and benign practice at the Trust and the fellow would be expected to be involved in both elements of the service To provide inpatients, day case and outpatients care for the patients requiring elective and emergency surgery, in accordance with the Trust contractual obligations The post holder is required to contribute to ongoing care of patients in their charge and in partnership with Consultant colleagues working in the specialist for the proper function of the department to which he/she is appointed. He/she will be expected to participate fully in the teaching activities within the department. He/she will share in the Unit's administrative responsibility and may attend consultant meetings. In the interest of the Directorate as a whole, timetables for all clinicians are regularly reviewed and discussed and modified. The post holder would undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his patients and the running of the clinical department to which he/she is appointed.
