As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.
We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees. As part of this investment, we are looking to recruit a Area Station Manager on a full-time, permanent basis based on our Birmingham, Snow Hill Line.
Job Purpose:

West Midlands Trains is seeking a dynamic and experienced Area Station Manager (ASM) to lead and manage over 40 stations, including 9 Customer Experience Managers (CEMs) and indirectly oversee more than 100 staff. This role also involves interfacing with 3 train crew depots, ensuring seamless collaboration between station teams and train crews. Leading and engaging colleagues within the station leadership team will be core to the role; setting standards for work and behaviour to be managed, building and managing strong relationships with trades union colleagues.
What does the role involve?
* Leadership and Management: Provide strong leadership to the front-line stations’ management team, ensuring the delivery of exceptional customer experience across all staffed and unstaffed stations.
* Community Engagement: Maintain and build relationships with community groups and stakeholders in conjunction with the External Communications team.
* Operational Excellence: Ensure adherence to safety, performance, reliability, and environmental targets, and manage depot audits and special event plans.
* Stakeholder Relationships: Collaborate with industry partners, tenants, suppliers, and local service partners to ensure consistent delivery of customer experience and operational performance.
* Financial Management: Deliver financial targets, manage budgets effectively, and ensure value for money through proactive resource planning and supplier management.
Job Challenges:
* Leading a large team during a period of change.
* Managing a geographically dispersed workforce with limited funding opportunities.
* Building effective relationships with trade unions during a turbulent period.
* Ensuring the delivery of the National Rail Contract (NRC).
* Managing customer disruption during major projects like HS2.
What skills and experience do I need to do the job?
* Proven record in building, coaching, and developing teams at all levels.
* Experience in leading teams to deliver positive results and managing complex projects.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence at a senior management level.
* Experience in trade union negotiations and safety management systems.
* High level of numeracy and analytical skills.
* Self-motivated with a passion for innovation and change.
