Applications are invited for a Consultant Ophthalmology - Specialist Interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful candidate will join a team of 6 other Consultant Ophthalmologists, 5 middle grade/training doctors, and an exceptional team of allied health professionals. The applicant must be experienced in the management of Paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity ward rounds, and general and acute ophthalmic conditions. He/she will actively participate in audit projects and contribute to the Paediatric Ophthalmology Service, including the development of nursing and allied health professionals in extended roles.
The eye department serves Milton Keynes and the immediate surrounding areas, consisting of a modern outpatient and day case surgery unit. This self-contained unit is situated within the hospital campus with easy access, onsite parking, and nearby railway links. Fast trains from Milton Keynes central to London Euston are regular, with a journey time of under 40 minutes.
The outpatient eye department features 7 consulting rooms, 4 orthoptic rooms, and 3 optometry rooms. The department also includes a dedicated intravitreal injection room, 2 additional treatment rooms, and a laser room equipped with YAG, SLT, and Argon lasers with indirect delivery. Equipment includes ultrasound A & B scans, IOL Master 700, Topography, 2 x Topcon Triton OCTAs, Zeiss OCTA’s, and an Optomap Silverstone widefield fundus/OCT camera. There are 5 part-time optometrists with a contact lens and low vision aid service working alongside our eye clinic liaison officer (ECLO). Three full-time and three part-time orthoptists support the department, along with the Community Orthoptic Screening Service. Allied health professionals are utilized in our eye clinic, and there are optometry shared care clinics in glaucoma, nurse/orthoptic-led injection clinics, and orthoptic biometrists. Ophthalmic technicians perform vision testing, visual field, and OCT imaging. The Ophthalmic Co-ordinations Hub is situated within the department itself.
There is an active teaching program for junior staff in Ophthalmology. Continuous medical education at all levels is encouraged, along with monthly departmental audits. The department is keen to develop its doctors, encouraging their professional development and goals.
As is appropriate for a unit of this size, all consultants are general ophthalmologists capable of managing any ophthalmic problem that may arise, although each surgeon has a particular special interest. Current consultant interests include Glaucoma, Medical Retina, Vitreo-retinal, Strabismus/Paediatric Ophthalmology, and Oculo-plastics. The post holder is expected to contribute to the running of both Paediatric Ophthalmology and General Ophthalmology clinics, supervise middle grade doctors in casualty, and, when appropriate, see urgent eye casualty patients. Triage of referrals into ophthalmology is also an essential requirement of the job plan.
The successful applicant will participate in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students associated with the University of Buckingham and will support colleagues in these activities as part of their arranged job plan.
