The Role:
BG&E have a strong reputation and skill set in utilising materials science to fully understand existing and in-situ materials to enable the most efficient use of them in the project context. To maintain and reinforce that capability we are looking for a capable, competent candidate who is curious and eager to expand on their experience and who wants to work closely with design engineers, our clients and third parties who will benefit directly from your materials advice and understanding.
As a Senior Materials Engineer you will represent BG&E in materials engineering in the UK market.
The role will include responsibilities including:
* Conducting business development meetings independently to secure new clients and new opportunities.
* Independently drafting reports.
* Independently drafting proposals with attention to the commercial aspects involved in quoting projects.
* Undertaking field work independently and as part of a team. Field work including overseeing subcontractors extracting concrete cores, cover meter scanning, and other invasive testing.
* Managing a project from inception, including budgeting, resourcing, revenue recognition and invoicing.
* Confidently working with external partners and clients.
About You:
You will be a key member of the BG&E Engineering team, where you'll strengthen our skills and capabilities and provide support to our engineering and drafting teams.
As a successful applicant you’ll have:
* At least 10 years’ experience in construction and materials engineering fields.
* Qualifications in Materials Science and/or Engineering.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills internally and with our clients.
* Sound technical background and analytical skills relating to:
* Concrete technology including durability relating to chloride diffusion, carbonation, and thermal modelling.
* Metallurgy, corrosion mechanics, and general understanding of coatings;
* Statistical analysis.
* Sound understanding of relevant engineering standards and guidelines.
* Strong understanding of applicable non-invasive and invasive testing tools such as cover meters, Schmidt Hammer, and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity testing.
* Sound understanding of defects within construction with concrete, steel, and masonry, including how these should be repaired and associated products.
* Experience dealing with subcontractors and have contacts working in the UK associated with construction materials that would be helpful in completing your projects.
* Confidence to introduce yourself around the different disciplines in the office including the bridge, buildings, and civil teams.
* Ideally CSCS White Card and Driver’s License, working at height and working in confined space tickets.
* Good ties with industry bodies and partners associated with construction and materials engineering.
* An understanding of embodied carbon studies, decarbonisation of materials, and sustainability initiatives in construction.
